Pardon paces Wildcats with 20 points

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — A strong second-half effort from Dererk Pardon nearly gave Northwestern a win in its first Big Ten road trip of the season, but the Wildcats fell to Purdue, 74-69, on Sunday afternoon at Mackey Arena in a back-and-forth game that featured 13 lead changes.

Pardon led Northwestern with a team-high 20 points, 14 of which came in the second half, along with eight rebounds and four assists. Vic Law added 12 points, 10 of which came in the second half, as well as 10 rebounds to give him his first double-double this season. Scottie Lindsey chipped in with 17 points, while Isiah Brown added nine off the bench.

Bryant McIntosh finished the night with five points and a team-high five assists, moving his career total to 602 and making him the 13th player in Big Ten history to accumulate 600 career assists.

Northwestern got off to a quick start offensively, converting on three of its first five shots of the game to jump out to a 6-2 lead. Hot shooting by Purdue gave the Boilermakers a double-digit lead midway through the first half.

However, the Wildcats clawed their way back into the game as they went on a 14-1 run to take a 27-25 lead. Lindsey had six points to jump start the run, while Brown got hot and scored seven points in just over a two minute span to give the #B1GCats the lead late in the half. The 'Cats also ramped up their efforts defensively, holding Purdue scoreless for over three minutes and without a field goal for over six minutes during the run.

Following the run, Purdue responded with a triple and a pair of free throws to take back the lead, but back-to-back baskets by Gavin Skelly helped tie the score, 33-33, heading into halftime.

Lindsey led all players at the half with 11 points on 5-of-12 shooting. Brown finished with seven points, all of which were scored in the final five minutes of the half, while Pardon added four points along with seven rebounds. As a team, Northwestern shot 41.7 percent (15-36) from the field while holding the Boilermakers to 37.9 percent shooting (11-29) in the opening half.

Purdue got off to a hot start to open the second half, but Northwestern was able to keep the lead close thanks to some stellar play from Pardon, who scored the first eight points of the half for the Wildcats. With 11:24 remaining in the game, Pardon converted on his fourth midrange jumper of the game to give NU a 48-47 lead.

The lead continued to go back-and-forth midway through the second half as Law converted on his second three-pointer of the half to put NU up, 51-49. Then on the ensuing possession following a Purdue basket, Lindsey drove past Carsen Edwards for an emphatic two-handed slam to give the 'Cats a 53-51 lead.

Later in the action, Pardon continued his second-half takeover as he scored six consecutive points to bring his total to 20 on the night and give the Wildcats a 62-61 lead with 3:32 remaining.

Law converted on his third triple of the half and Lindsey hit back-to-back jumpers in the final minutes. However, despite getting some good looks on the final two possessions of the game, Northwestern could not keep up with Purdue down the stretch, falling 74-69.

Northwestern will be back in action on Monday, Dec. 11 when it hosts Chicago State at Allstate Arena. Tip off is scheduled for 6 p.m, with the action being televised on FS1. Tickets are available online at NUsports.com or by calling 888-GO-PURPLE.

Northwestern Notes vs. Purdue – Dec. 3, 2017
• This was the lone regular-season matchup between Northwestern and Purdue. Including Friday's game against Illinois, each of NU's first two Big Ten games were against teams they'll only face once.
• Northwestern entered the game having won its last three Big Ten road openers.
Bryant McIntosh recorded 5 assists in the game. In doing so, he surpassed Michigan State's Eric Snow for 13th place in Big Ten history and also became the 13th player in conference history to record 600 career assists. McIntosh currently has 602 career assists.
• Northwestern got a boost off the bench from sophomore guard who scored a season-high 9 points. Brown's previous season high was 5 points in the team's most recent game against Illinois Dec. 1.
Dererk Pardon's 20 points are a season high and mark the second 20-point game of his career. He scored a career-best 28 points at Nebraska Dec. 30, 2015.
Vic Law's 10 rebounds are a season high and the double-double is the third of his career.
