Spartans Shooting Sinks Wildcats

McIntosh leads Northwestern with 14 points
EVANSTON, Ill. — Missed shots plagued Northwestern (15-7, 3-6 B1G) as the Wildcats fell, 76-45, to No. 12 Michigan State (18-4, 4-4 B1G) in a Big Ten battle at Welsh-Ryan Arena Thursday night.
Northwestern was not able to cool off Michigan State's hot hands all night as the Spartans shot 50.9 percent (28-of-55) from the field and 61.5 percent from the 3-point line.
Sophomore guard Bryant McIntosh led the 'Cats with 14 points, while freshman Aaron Falzon chipped in 11. This was the 18th time this season that McIntosh has scored in double figures.
Denzel Valentine led all scorers in the contest with 19 points, which included a 5-of-7 mark from the behind the 3-point line. Matt McQuaid shot 6-of-10 from the field to score 17 points.
Michigan State scored seven straight points out of the gate to begin the game, but the Wildcats countered with a 6-0 run of their own to pull the within a point.
The remainder of the half was dominated by Michigan State's perimeter shooting. The Spartans hit 8-of-11 (72.7 percent) shots from behind the arc in the opening 20 minutes, led by Valentine, who was a perfect 4-of-4 on 3-pointers.
Despite the early onslaught of 3-pointers from Michigan State, the Wildcats were able to stay within striking distance by getting to the free throw line in the first half. The Wildcats made good on all seven of their attempts from the charity stripe in the first half to head into the locker room down, 36-24.
McIntosh scored 10 of his 14 in the first half.
Northwestern will face No. 3 Iowa on Sunday, Jan 31 at 2 p.m. CT. The Big Ten Network and WGN Radio will carry the game's action.
