'Cats Host No. 2 Huskers in Sold-Out Welsh-Ryan Arena

11/2/2024 4:52:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern volleyball is set to host No. 2 Nebraska in the first sellout in program history on Sunday in Welsh-Ryan Arena. First serve between the 'Cats (4-15, 2-9 B1G) and the Huskers (21-1, 11-0 B1G) is set for noon CT on B1G+.

STORYLINES:
  • Rylen Reid reached double digits in kills for the second time in her career on Friday against Illinois, leading the team with ten over four sets. That total is Reid's highest since Sept. 14, when she contributed a career-high 12 at Notre Dame.
  • Sara Griffith made her second appearance and her first start as a Wildcat in Friday's match against Illinois. She saw action in every set and contributed two blocks during her time on the floor.
  • Entering play Friday, the 'Cats have combined for 168 blocks as a team on the season, with seven different players contributing ten or more. With eight blocks as a team against the Hoosiers last Sunday and seven against the Illini Friday, Northwestern has totaled seven or more blocks in eight of their 11 Big Ten matches. Entering the weekend, their team 2.40 blocks-per-set clip ranked 10th in the Big Ten and 64th in the NCAA.

THE MATCH-UP:

Northwestern and Nebraska have met 21 times before, with the Huskers coming out victorious in all but one of the matches. The Wildcats' sole victory came in 2011, when they triumphed over Nebraska 3-1 in the season finale at Welsh-Ryan Arena. The 'Cats have just one win over a top-five ranked opponent in program history - over No. 3 Penn State in 2015.

Nebraska heads to Evanston as the No. 2-ranked team in the country after amassing a 21-1 record on the season so far. The Huskers are a perfect 11-0 in Big Ten play after sweeping Wisconsin on the road Friday. Their first and only loss this year was at SMU on Sept. 3 - a three-set victory for the Mustangs.

UP NEXT:

The 'Cats prepare for another top-five opponent at the end of the week, as they get set to host No. 3 Penn State in Evanston. Friday's match between Penn State and Northwestern is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT.
