Northwestern Routs Chicago State, 13-1

CHICAGO — Thanks to an effective start by rookie Mike Doherty and a robust offensive performance, Northwestern topped Chicago State, 13-1, at Cougar Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

Doherty, making his first-career start, tossed 5.0-scoreless innings while allowing only two hits and fanning five. The rookie earned his first-career win.

Senior Jack Dunn was exceptional, reaching base four times, scoring a career-high tying four times, and going 2-for-4. He also swiped a pair of bags. Junior Alex Erro posted his first three-hit game of the season, going 3-for-6 with a career-high tying two doubles, plus three RBI.

NU stole four bags in the game, tying the Wildcats' season-high.

The Wildcats struck first in the top of the first inning thanks to a manufactured run. Shawn Goosenberg was hit by pitch, stole second, and was driven in with an RBI single by David Dunn. The run batted in was Dunn's sixth with two outs, tying him for the fourth-most this season.

Northwestern scored again in the third after a Goosenberg single drove in Jack Dunn, extending the NU lead to 2-0.

NU's offense exploded in the fourth for three runs. Jack Dunn extended the Northwestern lead to 3-0 with an RBI single before a ground-rule double by Alex Erro drove in a pair.

Chicago's Big Ten Team notched two more runs in the top of the fifth, one of which came on Willie Bourbon's eighth-career triple. The other run came via a Michael Trautwein RBI single though the right side.

The 'Cats further extended their lead as Jack Dunn scored on a throwing error in the sixth inning, pushing the NU advantage to 8-0.

The Cougars threatened to score in the bottom of the sixth, loading the bases against the reliever Tommy D'Alise. David Dunn corralled a shallow fly-out and, with the CSU runners attempting to advance, sprinted in to touch second base to complete the double play.

In the seventh inning, the Wildcats tied their season high with five runs scored. A back-to-back-to-back skein including a Jack Anderson double, a Jack Dunn single, and an Erro double accounted for three of the five runs.

The Cougars hit a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh to get on the board for the first time in the game.

Northwestern is set to host San José State this weekend at Miller Park for a non-conference series.
