EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern dropped the second game of a three-game series vs. No. 23 Nebraska, 10-1, in a five-inning affair on Sunday afternoon at Sharon J. Drysdale Field.
Nebraska stuck first with four runs in the top of the first inning to jump out to an early lead. Renae Cunningham entered in relief and stranded a pair of runners in scoring position to limit the damage. Northwestern threatened with runners in scoring position in both the first and third innings, but ultimately could not convert.
Cunningham went on to toss three-straight scoreless innings, retiring 11-of-15 batters faced, before Nebraksa added to its lead in the top of the fifth inning.
Grace Nieto, Kelsey Nader and Kansas Robinson all recorded hits for the Wildcats. Robinson led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a solo home run to straightaway center field, her sixth home run of the season and her team-leading 29th RBI on the year.
In her last eight games, Robinson has now driven in 19 RBI while posting a .520 batting average (13-for-25). After homering just twice in the Wildcats' first 27 games, Robinson has now hit four home runs over Northwestern's last seven games.
Both Nieto and Nader recorded stolen bases for the 'Cats, extending their totals to a career-high nine stolen bags on the season. Nieto and Nader rank tied for second on the team in stolen bases, behind Kaylie Avvisato (19); the last time Northwestern had three different players reach double-digit stolen bases in a season was in 2022 (Rachel Lewis: 26, Skyler Shellmyer: 22, Ayana Lindsey 13).
The Wildcats and Cornhuskers are back in action to wrap up the series on Monday afternoon, with first pitch at The J scheduled for 3 pm CT.
