'Cats Close Regular Season with 74-61 Defeat at No. 13 Maryland

3/8/2025 6:54:00 PM | Men's Basketball

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Junior Nick Martinelli set the program single-season record for field goals made while scoring a game-high 28 points in a 74-61 defeat at No. 13 Maryland inside the XFINITY Center on Saturday afternoon.

Martinelli's 28 points came from 8-of-19 shooting from the field and a perfect 11-of-11 from the charity stripe. He also pulled down seven rebounds and set a career-high in free throws made. Martinelli's fifth made field goal was his 229th, moving him past John Shurna (2011-12, 228). The junior's 626 points this season are the third-most in a single-season in program history.

Martinelli's 28 points are the most by a Northwestern player against a ranked team on the road since Jan. 31, 2016, when Tre Demps scored 30 at Iowa.

Martinelli's 11 made free throws are the most by a Northwestern player who shot 100% from the line since Boo Buie converted 12 free throws on Feb. 25, 2021, against Minnesota.

Martinelli continued his incredible scoring streaks by posting his 24th consecutive game in double-digit scoring (most by a Wildcat since at least 2000) and his 16th straight game with 15+ points (most by a Wildcat since at least 1996), which is the longest active streak by a high-major player.

Northwestern forced the Terrapins (24-7, 14-6 Big Ten) to turn the ball over a season-high 18 times.

Graduate student Ty Berry, making his 100th career start, scored 10 points, knocking down 2-of-4 threes, and dished out two assists. Berry has scored 10+ points in 12 of his last 15 games and has made 2+ threes in 14 of his last 15 games.

Mullins added seven points and three steals. First-year K.J. Windham contributed seven points and a team-high four assists.

After falling down 6-2 early, the Wildcats went on a team-best 7-0 run to retake the lead. Northwestern wound up taking a 19-12 lead, which would be its largest lead of the contest. By this juncture, fewer than 12 minutes into the contest, the Terrapins had turned the ball over seven times.

Maryland went on an 8-0 to retake the lead, and the teams exchanged the lead throughout the remainder of the first half. The Terrapins entered halftime with a 32-29 advantage. Martinelli led all scorers with 16 points, scoring 16 of the team's first 26 points and being responsible for all 10 of the Wildcats' points from 9:00 to 2:00 in the first half.

With 13:00 remaining, Berry knocked down a free throw to give the 'Cats a 42-41 lead, their first lead since 21-20 with over five minutes remaining in the first half. Moments later, the Terrapins took the lead back with a 14-4 run and never returned it.

Northwestern was outrebounded 45-23, including 16-6 on the offensive glass.

The league's top 15 teams qualify for the upcoming Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament, which takes place at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind. from Wednesday, March 12 through Sunday, March 16.
