EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern men's basketball faces Big Ten Conference newcomer Washington for the first time since 2012 on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 9:30 p.m. CT inside Alaska Airlines Arena in Seattle. The contest will air on Big Ten Network with Aaron Goldsmith (play-by-play) and Jordan Taylor (analyst) on the call and can be heard on WGN Radio 720 and SiriusXM Channel 372 with Dave Eanet (play-by-play) and Billy McKinney (analyst).
Last time out, junior Nick Martinelli hit a game-winning floater with 2.4 seconds remaining to defeat USC, 77-75 on Tuesday evening (Feb. 4) in Evanston. Martinelli registered his second consecutive double-double, posting 27 points and 13 rebounds, 10 of which came on the offensive glass.
Martinelli joined Zach Edey (Purdue) and Luka Garza (Iowa) as the only Big Ten players since 2005-06 to record 25+ points and 10+ offensive rebounds in a game. He became the first Wildcat to pull down 10+ offensive rebounds in a game since Jan. 2, 2018, when Dererk Pardon had 11 against Nebraska. The Glenview, Ill. native recorded his third 25+ point, 10+ rebound game of the season, while no other Big Ten player has recorded more than one such game this season. He posted the fifth double-double of his career and led Northwestern in scoring for the 10th time this season.
The Wildcats (13-10, 4-8 Big Ten) recorded 23 offensive rebounds, their most in a game against a Division I opponent since at least 2009-10. Northwestern outrebounded the Trojans 43-27, overall.
Junior Justin Mullins recorded 14 points, shooting 4-of-5 from three, and seven rebounds in 37 minutes. He tied his career-high with four made threes. Mullins' 14 points, four treys, and 37 minutes are all his most as a Wildcat. Graduate student Ty Berry totaled nine points, all of which came in the first half, while pulling down six rebounds and dishing out three assists. Northwestern received a productive outing from its big men, graduate students Matthew Nicholson and Keenan Fitzmorris. Nicholson registered nine points and six rebounds, while Fitzmorris tied season-highs with eight points and three rebounds.
Northwestern is scoring an average of 74.0 points per game this season, its highest scoring season since the 1993-94 team averaged 75.0 points per game. As a team, the Wildcats are averaging 9.7 turnovers lost per game, which is the fewest in the Big Ten, and ranks 17th fewest nationally. Northwestern has had 10 or fewer turnovers in each of its last four games. The team's 1.54 assist/turnover ratio ranks third in the Big Ten and 30th in the nation. The 'Cats pull down 11.5 offensive rebounds per game, which is third in the conference.
Martinelli was named to the Oscar Robertson Trophy Midseason Watch List on Monday afternoon. Martinelli is third in the Big Ten and ranks 22nd nationally, averaging 19.7 points per game. He places fourth in the country in scoring by high-major forwards, trailing only Eric Dixon (23.8, Villanova), Maxime Raynaud (20.2, Stanford), and Dawson Garcia (20.1, Minnesota). Martinelli has scored 15+ points in 20 games this season, which is tied for the conference lead and is currently on a career-best streak of scoring 15+ points in eight straight contests. The Glenview, Ill. native has registered his six 25+ point games this season, which is the most by a Northwestern forward since John Shurna had six such games in the 2011-12 season.
The Wildcats will be without stat sheet stuffer Brooks Barnhizer (foot) for the remainder of the season. After his final game against Rutgers (Jan. 29), he posted season averages of 17.1 points, 8.8 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 2.3 steals and 1.1 blocks per game. Barnhizer, who played 96 career games for Northwestern, became the first Big Ten player to post career marks of 1000+ points, 500+ rebounds and 200+ assists in 96 or fewer games since Michael Redd at Ohio State from 1997-2000.
Graduate student Jalen Leach has scored 15+ points in five of his last six games and is averaging 14.3 points per game, which ranks 20th in the Big Ten. Leach's 4.4 assists per game in conference play ranks 10th, and he has dished out 4+ assists in a career-best streak of eight consecutive games.
Berry has totaled 230 career 3-pointers, two away from tying Drew Crawford (2009-14) for the fifth-most in program history.
Northwestern trails the all-time series against the Huskies (11-11, 2-9 Big Ten) 6-2, with the 'Cats having lost the last three contests. Northwestern's lone wins came in 1958 and 1960, both in Evanston. The team's last matchup in 2012 came in the second round of the NIT, where Washington won 76-55. John Shurna dropped 24 points, draining five threes, six rebounds, and four steals.
The Huskies are coming off an 86-72 loss against Nebraska at home. Forward Great Osobor leads the team in points (15.6), rebounds (8.6), assists (3.2), and steals (2.0) per game. Tyler Harris averages 12.1 points and 5.3 rebounds per game, both of which rank second on the team.
