Northwestern Returns to Welsh-Ryan Arena on Sunday against Nebraska

EVANSTON, Ill. – Amid a stretch where it plays four of five games on the road, Northwestern men's basketball returns home to take on Nebraska on Sunday, Feb. 16 at 2 p.m. CT inside Welsh-Ryan Arena. The contest will air on Big Ten Network with Dave Revsine (play-by-play) and Jess Settles (analyst) on the call and can be heard on WGN Radio 720 and SiriusXM Channel 372 with Dave Eanet (play-by-play) and Billy McKinney (analyst).
Junior Nick Martinelli was named to the Oscar Robertson Trophy Midseason Watch List last week. Martinelli is second in the Big Ten and ranks 22nd nationally, averaging 19.7 points per game. He places fifth in the country in scoring by high-major forwards, trailing only Eric Dixon (23.5, Villanova), Maxime Raynaud (19.9, Stanford), Cooper Flagg (19.8, Duke), and Dawson Garcia (19.8, Minnesota). Martinelli has scored 15+ points in 22 games this season, which is tied for the conference lead. Martinelli is currently on a career-best streak of scoring 15+ points in 10 straight contests and is the first Wildcat to do so since John Shurna accomplished this feat from Jan. 14 - Feb. 18, 2012. The Glenview, Ill. native has registered 12 20+ point games this season, which is the most by a Northwestern forward since Shurna had 18 such games in the 2011-12 season.
The Wildcats (13-12, 4-10 Big Ten) are scoring an average of 73.9 points per game this season, its highest scoring season since the 1993-94 team posted 75.0 points per game. As a team, the Wildcats are averaging 9.6 turnovers lost per game, which is the fewest in the Big Ten, and ranks 17th fewest nationally. The team's 1.51 assist/turnover ratio ranks third in the Big Ten and 29th in the nation. Northwestern forces 13.5 turnovers per game, fifth in the Big Ten, and has a turnover margin of +3.8, which ranks fourth in the Big Ten and 20th nationally.
The 'Cats register 7.5 steals per game, which is fifth in the Big Ten. Northwestern has averaged over 7+ steals per game in each of the last three seasons, the first time it has done that since 2006-09. The Wildcats pull down 10.9 offensive rebounds per game, which is sixth in the conference. It is the program's highest total in a season since 1996-97 (11.9).
The Wildcats will be without stat sheet stuffer Brooks Barnhizer (foot) for the remainder of the season. After his final game against Rutgers (Jan. 29), he posted season averages of 17.1 points, 8.8 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 2.3 steals and 1.1 blocks per game. Barnhizer, who played 96 career games for Northwestern, became the first Big Ten player to post career marks of 1,000+ points, 500+ rebounds and 200+ assists in 96 or fewer games since Michael Redd at Ohio State from 1997-2000.
Northwestern will also be without graduate student Jalen Leach, who averaged 14.3 points per game, for the remainder of the season. In conference play, he averaged 4.4 assists per game. He scored 15+ points in six of his final seven games and dished out 4+ assists in a career-best streak of eight consecutive games.
Graduate student Ty Berry has scored 10+ points in seven of his last nine games. He has knocked down 2+ threes in 10 Big Ten games and is one of seven players to do so. Berry is for the fifth most made threes in program history with 236.
Last time out, Northwestern cut a 17-point deficit down to five with the help of a 50-point second half but fell at Oregon 81-75 on Tuesday night (Feb. 11). First-year K.J. Windham notched a career-high 20 points, shooting 8-of-14 from the field and 4-of-7 from beyond the arc.
Windham scored the most points by a first-year Wildcat since Boo Buie posted 25 on Dec. 21, 2019, against DePaul. Windham also became the first Northwestern first-year to drain 4+ threes in a game since Boo Buie had five against Rutgers on Feb. 9, 2020. Windham joined Angelo Ciaravino (Jan. 6 at Purdue) with a 19+ point game this season, as the two became the first duo of Northwestern first-years to both have 19+ point games in a season since 2019-20 when Boo Buie and Ryan Young did so.
Berry tied his season-high with 23 points, while shooting 8-of-10 from the field and 4-of-5 from three-point range. Martinelli tallied 16 points and six rebounds.
The Wildcats shot 31-of-60 (51.7%) from the field and 8-of-19 (42.1%) from beyond the arc. Northwestern outscored the Ducks 36-24 in the paint and 24-10 off the bench.
The Wildcats lead the all-time series against the Cornhuskers (16-9, 6-8 Big Ten) 14-10. Northwestern has won eight of the last nine matchups and six consecutive home contests against Nebraska The Wildcats' last home loss came on Feb. 8, 2014. The teams split the series last year with both teams recording home victories. Last time out on Feb. 7, 2024, Boo Buie led Northwestern to an 80-68 win with 22 points. Ryan Langborg tacked on 18 points, seven rebounds, and six assists, while Barnhizer had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Martinelli scored 15 points off the bench, then a career-high against a Big Ten opponent. Sullivan-Ubben Head coach Chris Collins is 12-6 in his career against the Cornhuskers.
