Windham Scores Career-High 20 Points in Defeat at Oregon

2/12/2025 1:34:00 AM | Men's Basketball

EUGENE, Ore. - Despite a 50-point second half and cutting a 17-point deficit down to five with under four minutes remaining, Northwestern couldn't get over the hump in an 81-75 defeat at Oregon on Tuesday night. First-year K.J. Windham notched a career-high 20 points, shooting 8-of-14 from the field and 4-of-7 from beyond the arc.

The Wildcats (13-12, 4-10 Big Ten) shot 31-of-60 (51.7%) from the field and 8-of-19 (42.1%) from beyond the arc.

Graduate student Ty Berry tied his season-high with 23 points, while shooting 8-of-10 from the field and 4-of-5 from the three-point range. Berry moved to fifth in most made threes in program history, moving past Drew Crawford (2009-14) with 236 threes in his career.

Windham scored the most points by a first-year Wildcat since Boo Buie scored 25 on Dec. 21, 2019, against DePaul. Windham also became the first Northwestern first-year to drain 4+ threes in a game since Boo Buie had five against Rutgers on Feb. 9, 2020. Windham joined Angelo Ciaravino (Jan. 6 at Purdue) with a 19+ point game this season, as the two became the first duo of Northwestern first-years to both have 19+ point games in a season since 2019-20 when Boo Buie and Ryan Young did so.

Junior Nick Martinelli tallied 16 points and six rebounds. Martinelli has scored 15+ points in 10 straight games, the longest streak by a Wildcat since John Shurna accomplished this feat from Jan. 14-Feb. 18, 2012. Martinelli has scored 15+ points in 22 games this season, which leads the Big Ten.

Northwestern outscored the Ducks (17-8, 6-8 Big Ten) 36-24 in the paint and 24-10 off the bench.

After falling behind 11-4, the 'Cats went on a 7-0 run to even the contest and soon thereafter took the lead at 14-13 with 11:44 remaining in the first half. This would be Northwestern's only lead. Oregon's lead, aided by a 9-0 run in the first half, got up to as many as 17 before entering halftime up 39-25.

The 'Cats shot 10-of-26 (38.5%) in the first half, which they followed up by shooting 21-of-34 (61.8%) in the ensuing half. Northwestern's 50-point second half was its third 50+ point second-half performance in Big Ten play this season. Prior to this season, Northwestern had not scored 50+ points in a half of Big Ten play since Feb. 27, 2016 against Rutgers.

Northwestern's 11-3 run from 7:30 to 5:11 in the second half cut the lead to single digits. Windham knocked down three treys during this stretch. Although the lead was cut to five with less than three minutes remaining, the 'Cats could not pull out the victory.

The Wildcats converted on 5-of-10 free throws (50%), while the Ducks went 25-for-28 (89.3%) from the stripe.

Northwestern returns to Welsh-Ryan Arena on Sunday, Feb. 16 at 2 p.m. CT to face Nebraska on Alumni Day. The game will air on Big Ten Network and WGN Radio 720.
