Northwestern Bested by No. 20 Purdue in West Lafayette

1/5/2025 4:42:00 PM | Men's Basketball

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Northwestern suffered a 79-61 setback to No. 20 Purdue at Mackey Arena on Sunday afternoon. The Wildcats (10-5, 1-3 Big Ten) never led against the Boilermakers, (11-4, 3-1 Big Ten) who won their 25th consecutive home game.

"Give Purdue all the credit in the world," Sullivan-Ubben Head Men's Basketball Coach Chris Collins said. "They were ready to play. … It's really hard to win on the road in this league, and we just saw that this week."

First-year Angelo Ciaravino led Northwestern in scoring with a career-high 19 points, shooting 8-of-14 from the field and 3-of-7 from beyond the arc. Ciaravino became the first Northwestern first-year to score 15+ points in a conference game since Boo Buie had 15 points against Nebraska on March 1, 2020 and also became the first Wildcat first-year to lead the team in scoring since Ryan Young led Northwestern with 17 points against Maryland on Feb. 18, 2020.

"(Angelo's) fearless," Collins said. "He's athletic. He's not afraid of the movement. He's competitive. … That was the one real bright spot, in my opinion, was Angelo's minutes."

Senior Brooks Barnhizer stuffed the stat sheet with 11 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and three blocks. Graduate student Jalen Leach logged 11 points and two assists while knocking down 3-of-7 of his three-point attempts, while junior Nick Martinelli added double-digit scoring with 10 points and five rebounds.

Northwestern's bench outscored the Boilermakers' bench, 29-19. The Wildcats outscored Purdue 43-38 in the second half.

The Boilermakers jumped out to a 7-0 lead within the game's opening minute and a half. Purdue later went on a 9-0 run, 10-0 run, and another 7-0 run throughout the remainder of the first-half to lead by 23 points at halftime.

Northwestern outscored Purdue 43-38 in the second half, where the Wildcats shot 5-of-11 from three-point range. Ciaravino scored 15 of his 19 points in the second half. Northwestern went on a 7-0 run from 9:31 to 7:12 in the second half to cut into the Purdue lead.

The Wildcats return to Welsh-Ryan Arena on Sunday, Jan. 12 to host Michigan State in a game that will be played at either 11 a.m. CT or 3:30 p.m. CT (game time will be announced soon). The game will air on FOX and WGN Radio 720.
