'Cats Open Conference Play 2-0 With Wins Over Rutgers, Maryland

EVANSTON, Ill. - Women's tennis opened Big Ten play this weekend with a 2-0 showing against Rutgers and Maryland, preserving their perfect home record this season. The 'Cats beat the Scarlet Knights 4-0 on Saturday before shutting down the Terrapins in a 6-1 victory on Sunday.
Northwestern (11-4, 2-0 B1G) took the doubles point in both matches, beginning with Rutgers (9-4, 0-2 B1G) on Saturday. Christina Hand and Justine Leong - ranked No. 48 as a doubles duo - started the afternoon off with a 6-0 sweep of their opponents at the first position, then Sydney Pratt and Neena Feldman wrapped up the match's first point with a 6-4 victory at #3.
In singles play, Hand and Pratt each picked up another victory in straight sets. At #3 singles, Hand defeated her opponent 6-3, 6-3, while Pratt won at the #4 position with her own 6-3, 6-3 match. Maria Shusharina accounted for the other singles point; at #1 singles, she downed Rutgers' Tara Chilton 6-2, 6-3, and the 'Cats came away with the 4-0 victory in their conference opener.
Northwestern picked up right where it left off the following afternoon against Maryland (9-6, 1-2 B1G). Pratt and Feldman logged another doubles victory together, 6-0, with Shusharina and Britany Lau accounting for the other doubles win, 6-4.
The 'Cats also dominated singles play against the Terrapins and picked up wins on five of six courts. Pratt kept her weekend perfect with a 6-4, 6-1 win at the fourth position, improving her to 12-1 this season individually. Leong, ranked No. 104 by the ITA, picked up a ranked victory at #2 singles with a 6-1, 6-4 win over No. 77 Selma Cadar. Shusharina came out on top of a second-set tiebreak to complete her second singles win of the weekend as well and clinch victory for Northwestern.
After locking up the win, Feldman and Hand added on two more singles victories for good measure. At the six position, Feldman blanked her opponent 6-0 in the first set, then came back after dropping the second set to wrap up a win in the third, 6-3. Hand finished the day with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 win at #3 singles, making it a 6-1 win for the 'Cats.
Northwestern will continue Big Ten play this upcoming weekend with a pair of road matches at Nebraska and Iowa. First serve in Lincoln is scheduled for Friday at 4 p.m., then the 'Cats will begin play against the Hawkeyes at noon on Sunday.
