IOWA CITY, Iowa - No. 35 Northwestern remains perfect in Big Ten play after sweeping a weekend swing on the road at Nebraska and No. 75 Iowa. The 'Cats beat the Huskers 4-3 on Friday, then downed the Hawkeyes 4-1 on Sunday. The wins improve the Wildcats to 13-4 on the season overall and 4-0 in conference play.
To open the weekend's action, Nebraska got out to an early lead by claiming the doubles point. The 'Cats quickly evened things back out in singles action, however, with a dominant 6-3, 6-1 win from Maria Shusharina at the first position.
Sydney Pratt briefly gave the 'Cats the lead with a 6-4, 6-2 victory, then Nebraska evened it back out with a singles win of their own at #6. Northwestern's third point came from Christina Hand, who won 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 at #3 singles, then Nebraska claimed their third point at #2 singles. That left the match point at #5, where Kiley Rabjohns came in clutch with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 comeback victory to lock up victory for the 'Cats.
With one victory under their belt, Northwestern continued their success early in Iowa City. Pratt and doubles partner Neena Feldman combined with Hand and Justine Leong to secure the doubles point and put the 'Cats up 1-0.
Shusharina and Hand contributed another singles win apiece on the weekend, both winning dominant 6-1, 6-2 victories to provide two of three singles points. For Shusharina, the win was over a ranked opponent in No. 122 Daianne Hayashida. The last Northwestern point came from Britany Lau, who made quick work of #6 singles and wrapped up a 6-2, 6-0 individual win.
Tied atop the conference standings, Northwestern will continue their Big Ten schedule with another road test this Saturday at No. 34 Illinois. That match is set to begin at 4 p.m.
