Northwestern Closes Out Calendar Year against Northeastern

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern men's basketball concludes its 2024-25 non-conference slate by hosting Northeastern at 12:30 p.m. CT on Sunday, Dec. 29 inside Welsh-Ryan Arena. The game will air on Peacock with Chris Vosters (play-by-play) and Stephen Bardo (analyst) on the call, and WGN Radio 720 and SiriusXM Channel 390 with Dave Eanet (play-by-play) and Billy McKinney (analyst) describing the action.

Last time out, the Wildcats, (9-3, 1-1 Big Ten) propelled by an early 20-0 run, beat DePaul 84-64, on Saturday (Dec. 21) inside Welsh-Ryan Arena. Senior Brooks Barnhizer recorded his fifth consecutive double-double by posting 21 points, 12 rebounds, six assists, four steals and three blocks. He became the first high-major player in the country to post at least those numbers in a game since LSU's Ben Simmons on Dec. 2, 2015, against North Florida. He is the first Big Ten guard to post five consecutive double-doubles since Ohio State's Evan Turner in 2009. In the process, he registered his 18th career double-double, tying Dererk Pardon (2015-19) for the second most double-doubles by a Wildcat since 1996-97.

Northwestern forced the Blue Demons to commit 18 turnovers and recorded a season-high 14 steals, its first time recording 14+ steals in a game since Jan. 8, 2023, in a win over Indiana. This marked the fourth time in the Chris Collins era that Northwestern had 14+ steals.

Junior Nick Martinelli had a game-high 23 points. It was his seventh game with 20+ points this season, Graduate student Jalen Leach added 13 points and tied his career-high with five steals, while fellow graduate student Matthew Nicholson tied his season-high with 14 points and tied his career-high with three steals.

The Wildcats are 15-1 inside Welsh-Ryan Arena in 2024, and have a 7-0 home record in the 2024-25 season, the team's best record at home to start a season since the 2016-17 team (8-0). Northwestern is 9-3 or better over the season's first 12 games in three straight seasons for the first time since 2009-12.

With five consecutive double-doubles, Barnhizer holds the longest active streak in the country. He and Martinelli are the only pair of teammates in the country averaging 19+ points per game. Both are averaging 19+ points and 6+ rebounds per game, something that only two other high-major players are doing in the nation.

Martinelli has registered seven games of 20+ points this season, which is tied for sixth-most nationally by a forward in the country this season. The total is the most in a season by a Northwestern forward since Vic Law posted seven such games in 2018-19. A Wildcat has not averaged 20+ points per game since John Shurna (20.0) in 2011-12.

As a team, the Wildcats are averaging 9.2 turnovers lost per game, which is the fewest in the Big Ten and ranks seventh fewest nationally. The 'Cats have recorded eight or fewer turnovers in three straight games, including a season-low four against Illinois.

Graduate student Ty Berry enters the game needing 20 points to reach 1,000 for his career and become the 41st player in school history to reach the benchmark.

Northwestern leads the all-time series against the Huskies (8-4, 0-0 CAA), 3-1, having last faced off in 1993, a duel the 'Cats won 92-65 in a neutral battle in DeLand, Florida.

The Huskies enter the contest after a 77-72 road loss to UMass. Rashad King, Northeastern's leading scorer, posted 19 points and a career-high 11 rebounds despite the loss. King's 17.7 points per game ranks fifth in the CAA, and his 4.0 assists per game ranks third. Northeastern's eight non-conference wins this season are its most since 2015-16.

The Wildcats will return to Big Ten play at 6 p.m. CT on Thursday, Jan. 2 when they travel to University Park to take on Penn State. The matchup will air on Peacock and WGN Radio 720.
