‘Cats finish seventh in team race
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (March 5, 2023) – Seven members of the Northwestern roster posted top-six podium finishes as the Wildcats closed out competition at the Big Ten Wrestling Championships on Sunday in Ann Arbor, Mich.
By virtue of their performances this weekend, eight Wildcats secured automatic bids to the NCAA Championships, with Michael DeAugustino (125 pounds), Chris Cannon (133 pounds), Frankie Tal-Shahar (141 pounds), Yahya Thomas (149 pounds), Trevor Chumbley (157 pounds), Maxx Mayfield (165 pounds), Andrew Davison (197 pounds), and Lucas Davison (285 pounds) all securing safe passage to the national meet.
DeAugustino, Cannon, and Chumbley all knocked off higher seeded opposition during consolation semifinal action en route to each placing fourth overall.
Facing off against fourth-seeded Eric Barnett (Wisconsin), DeAugustino jumped in front following a first-period takedown on his way to a 3-2 decision win as he ultimately secured a fourth straight top-four finish at the Big Ten Championships.
Deadlocked in a 2-2 tie in the closing minute of the third period with second-seeded Jesse Mendez (Ohio State), Cannon came up with the bout's deciding takedown with only 30 seconds remaining, wrapping up a 4-2 victory.
Chumbley, who entered his first Big Ten Championships seeded eighth, pulled off a third straight upset in the consolation semifinals, dispatching third-seeded Kendall Coleman (Purdue) by a 3-1 final.
Mayfield earned a fifth-place finish in thrilling fashion. After dropping his consolation semifinal earlier in the day, Mayfield powered through Bubba Wilson (Nebraska) to secure a takedown in the final 30 seconds and punctuate a 3-1 win. Lucas Davison joined Mayfield as a fifth-place finisher after a win by medical forfeit over Trent Hillger (Wisconsin).
Tal-Shahar and Thomas rounded out Northwestern's group of podium finishers, both picking up career-best sixth-place finishes.
Andrew Davison joined Northwestern's seven qualifiers from Saturday by battling his way through the ninth-place bracket to earn the Big Ten's final automatic qualifying bid at 197 pounds. Davison's takedown of Nick Willham (Indiana) with just under a minute remaining in the third period proved to be the difference in a 3-1 win.
The 'Cats will be idle next week before heading to Tulsa, Okla. for the NCAA Wrestling Championships, March 16-18.
