EVANSTON, Ill. – No. 25 Northwestern defeated Michigan State 6-1 on Friday night at the Combe Tennis Center in Evanston.

The Wildcats improved to 13-6 on the season and 2-1 in the Big Ten. They dropped the Spartans to 13-8 and 0-3 in the Big Ten.

Northwestern claimed the doubles point with two strong sets from No. 1 and No. 2. Felix Nordby and Steven Forman grabbed a 6-3 win and Simen Bratholm and Brian Berdusco clinched the point with another 6-3 win at No. 2.

Berdusco rolled to a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 6 over Josh Portnoy to make it 2-0.

Presley Thieneman extended the lead to 3-0 with a win over Graydon Lair. After a strong tiebreak to take his first set, he ran away in the second for a 7-6 (2), 6-0 decision.

Felix Nordby clinched the match for the Wildcats with a staight sets 6-3, 6-1 win over Nick Williams at No. 5.

Steven Forman made it 5-0 after coming through a third set super tiebreak to defeat Jack Winkler, 6-3, 4-6, 10-5.

While Trice Pickens could not take his third set tiebreak, Simen Bratholm finished off the match with a flourish, rebounding well from a second set tiebreak setback to win 7-5, 6-7 (3), 10-8, in a very tightly contested match at No. 2.

The Wildcats continue their weekend homestand on Sundat against No. 5. Michigan at 12 p.m. CT.
