UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – No. 20 Northwestern defeated Penn State, 4-3, on the road on Friday afternoon to start Big Ten play.

The Wildcats improved to 12-5 and dropped the Nittany Lions to 7-8.

The match took over four and half hours with only four courts available, but the 'Cats powered to a road win thanks to strong performances at the start of the lineup.

The 'Cats lost the doubles point after a marathon 15-13 tiebreak at No. 2 and could not consolidate the 6-4 win from Steven Forman and Felix Nordby at No. 1.

The team bounced back in singles, with Forman tying the match at 1-1 with a straightforward 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 1 over Malik Bhatnagar.

Simen Bratholm followed that up with a 6-2, 7-6 (0) win to make it 2-1 with an emphatic tiebreak to close out the match.

Trice Pickens held on to win at No. 3 with a speedy third set to earn a 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 victory.

Up 3-1, Presley Thieneman delivered a clutch third set after a second set tiebreak setback to win 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-3 and clinch the win for Northwestern.

Penn State won two matches after the clinch to make the scoreline more favorable at 4-3.

The Wildcats are back in action on Sunday at No. 3 Ohio State, with the match starting at 11 a.m. CT.
