EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern University student-athletes have announced their Robert E. and Emily H. King NU P.R.I.D.E. executive boards for a trio of leadership groups for the upcoming 2020-21 academic year.
The mission of the King NU P.R.I.D.E. Program is to help students find personal success through service on campus and their community while enhancing their leadership skills, celebrating diversity, and promoting student-athlete welfare through meaningful programming.
The three leadership groups with new executive boards are SAAC, P.U.R.P.L.E. and Engage.
"We are incredibly excited about the opportunity to empower and advocate alongside this phenomenal group of Wildcats as they work to fulfill the mission of these student-driven initiatives," said Senior Associate A.D./Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer Maria Sanchez. "In the midst of such turbulent and uncertain times, leadership will drive the change we seek in our community and beyond. Together we win."
The mission of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is to create an intentional platform for the student voice in order to ensure a world-class experience. The committee aims to enhance the student-athlete experience, promote student-athlete welfare and facilitate communication between student-athletes and Northwestern, the Big Ten and the NCAA. SAAC strives to create an environment for student-athletes to flourish, excel and build lifelong connections to Northwestern together.
The executive board for SAAC for the upcoming academic year features Bryce Jackson (football), Eric McIntosh (men's golf), Morgan Newport (softball), DJ Hwang (swimming and diving) and Madi Kennel (women's soccer).
Peers Urging Responsible Practice through Leadership and Education (P.U.R.P.L.E.) seeks to equip student-athletes with the knowledge and skills necessary to promote and lead healthy lifestyles while working to destigmatize help-seeking behaviors. P.U.R.P.L.E. Peer Mentors are selected student-athletes that represent every varsity team within the Northwestern University Athletics Department.
This program educates mentors in a multitude of wellness areas including mental health, alcohol and other drug awareness and sexual violence prevention. P.U.R.P.L.E. Peer Mentors communicate this knowledge to their respective teams, and as a bridge between teammates, coaches, athletic trainers, and administration in order to promote a healthy lifestyle.
Six student-athletes make up the P.U.R.P.L.E. executive board for the 2020-21 year: Shawn Goosenberg (baseball), Chris Ephron (men's tennis), Braeden Heald (football), Lindsey McKone (lacrosse), Kiara McNulty (volleyball) and Tatyana Hardwick (volleyball).
In collaboration with Campus Inclusion and Community, Engage seeks to create an inclusive culture within the student-athlete community through intentional conversations and meaningful programming.
Three student-athlete affinity alliances exist within Engage: Black Student-Athlete Alliance (BSA), International Student-Athlete Alliance (ISA) and Northwestern Athlete Alliance (LGBTQ+). Each of these groups are driven by students on the executive board. In addition to leading these groups, the executive board also plans wider programming that is open to all students.
The Engage Executive Board for the 2020-2021 academic year is made up of six student athletes: Christen Conley (field hockey), Florien Marcussen (field hockey), Willy Boatman (football), Genson Hooper Price (football), Madison Doucette (lacrosse) and Lauryn Satterwhite (women's basketball).
