COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Northwestern will fall to 7-2 in conference after their loss to the Terrapins 70-61 on Sunday afternoon, in a highly-contested game in College Park.
Junior Lindsay Pulliam led the court and the Wildcats with 20 points. The 'Cats also beat Maryland with 40 percent shooting from the field but lost out on points in the paint. Sophomore Veronica Burton stoked the Northwestern offense in the first half and shone on defense with four assists, 14 points, five rebounds and two steals.
Northwestern got off to a slow start in the first quarter, with Maryland holding the lead. After the break the 'Cats returned to the court with fire and the two teams traded the lead down the field throughout the quarter. After a 10-3 run by the Wildcats, Sophomore Sydney Wood ended the quarter with a layup to give Northwestern the lead going into the second half.
Coming out of the break, Maryland had a response for the Wildcat's dominant performance in the previous quarter taking the lead into the fourth. Pulliam opened up the scoring in the final quarter with a scrappy four-point play and ended the quarter with a long three, but the 'Cats were unable to bring back the lead.
The Wildcats will return home on Thursday to face off against Michigan at 7 p.m. at Welsh Ryan Arena as they continue their Big Ten campaign.
