EAST LANSING, Mich. - No. 22 Northwestern defeated Michigan State 76-48 on the road Thursday in its first game ranked in the AP Top 25 since Jan. 2016.
The Wildcats' victory ended Michigan State's perfect streak at home, dropping the Spartans to 8-1 in East Lansing this season. Northwestern improved to 17-2 overall and 7-1 in conference play, leaving them in a tie for first place atop the Big Ten standings.
Sophomore guard Veronica Burton provided the early spark for Northwestern, grabbing a steal in Michigan State territory and racing back the other way for an easy layup. This sent the Wildcats on a 13-2 run to close out the first quarter and provided the momentum they carried into halftime in the form of a ten-point lead.
Burton starred all night, matching her season record for steals with six, four of those coming in the first half, while tying junior Lindsay Pulliam for the team lead in points with 22 and coming down with eight rebounds. Abbie Wolf led the team in that category, coming down with nine boards.
Northwestern continued firing on all cylinders coming out of the half, starting the third quarter on a 14-2 tear. Michigan State had no answer as the Wildcats cruised to their 17th win of the season.
The 'Cats' speed and nose for the ball told the story in this one. Northwestern forced 24 Spartan turnovers and turned those into 35 points on the other side of the court. The team's 19 steals were its highest in game so far this season, beating the previous mark of 15.
Northwestern will continue on the road for its next game, heading to College Park for a Top 25 showdown with the #20 Maryland Terrapins on Sunday, Jan 26 at 5:30 p.m. CT.
