Northwestern Sweeps Ohio State, Tops the Buckeyes, 10-4

4/7/2019 12:52:00 PM | Baseball

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Northwestern finished their sweep of Ohio State on Sunday with a 10-4 demolition of the Buckeyes at Bill Davis Stadium.

The Wildcats have won nine of their last 11 games and have now swept two straight series.

Over the series, Northwestern put together 40 hits and 30 runs.

Infielder Alex Erro put together his second four-hit game of his season, going 4-for-6 with a double, RBI, and two runs scored. First baseman Willie Bourbon was also impressive, going 2-for-5 with four RBI.

Ohio State scored thrice in the first inning. NU's starter Tommy D'Alise settled in after the opening frame, setting down all seven batters he faced in the second through fourth innings.

In all, D'Alise pitched a career-high 3.1 innings while allowing only two hits.

Southpaw Jack Pagliarini tossed 2.1-effective innings of relief, allowing only two hits and fanning three while not allowing a run.

NU scored their first run of the game in the fourth inning on a solo home run by David Dunn, his second big fly of the season.

The Wildcat offense, as it has done all weekend, came to life in the latter innings. Northwestern took the lead in the seventh, plating four runs — three of which came on a bases-clearing double by Willie Bourbon.

Northwestern tacked on another five runs in the eighth inning. The scoring started with a deep RBI triple by pinch hitter Charlie Maxwell.

After an RBI single by Erro, Shawn Goosenberg chipped in with a two-RBI double to extend the Wildcat lead to 9-3. Willie Bourbon capped off the frame with an RBI single, pushing his single-game count to a season-high four.

Bourbon has driven in 10 runs in his last six games.

Northwestern got tremendous pitching from its relief corps in the series, allowing only two runs over 14.2 innings pitched, a 1.23 ERA.

The sweep was Northwestern's first over Ohio State in Wildcat history among series of more than two games.

Northwestern will play a midweek at Milwaukee on Tuesday at 6 p.m. for the Wildcats' next contest.
