NU & Maryland Combine For 42 Runs, Split Doubleheader

GAME ONE
In a back-and-forth affair, Northwestern took the first game of the doubleheader, 13-7.
Five Wildcats had multi-RBI contests, including a three RBI game by Alex Erro, who went 2-for-5 with a run scored, a double, and a home run.
Jack Dunn went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored in the game.
Willie Bourbon hit his team-best fourth home run of the season in the first inning, a two-run shot over the right-field fence that drove in Shawn Goosenberg.
Rookie Mike Doherty continued his stretch of effective pitching, allowing only one hit over 3.1-scoreless innings. He also fanned a career-high tying five batters.
In his last five outings, he has allowed only one run over 16.1 IP, a 0.55 ERA.
After a couple of scoreless frames, Maryland came back and scored two runs in the fifth inning — thanks to a pair of solo home runs — and three runs in the sixth inning.
Wildcat tosser Nick Paciorek came into the game with the bases loaded and one man out in the sixth inning and proceeded to strike out the next two batters to get out of the troublesome situation.
He continued to roll in the seventh inning, striking out the side.
NU took the lead in the eighth with a clutch, two-out, two-RBI double by rookie Shawn Goosenberg.
Paciorek returned to the mound in the eighth inning and narrowly got out unscathed, but a two-run Terrapin home run with two outs evened the score at 7-7.
Paciorek, however, finished his outing with a career-high seven strikeouts in 3.0 IP, meaning all but two of his outs came via the punch-out. The strikeout tally was also the most for a Wildcat reliever in a game this season.
Sam Lawrence finished the game with a scoreless 0.2 IP.
GAME TWO
Northwestern suffered a a 12-10 setback to Maryland in the nightcap. Four Wildcat batters had multi-hit games.
Willie Bourbon had a terrific day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two doubles, a run scored, a walk, and an RBI.
Bourbon again delivered the first RBI of the game for Northwestern thanks to a ground rule RBI double in the first.
After a pair of scoreless frames, Maryland's offense exploded for five runs in the top of the fourth. Not discouraged, NU's offense battled for three runs, thanks in part to a two-RBI double by Michael Trautwein, making the score 5-4 after four innings.
After a scoreless fifth inning, both teams combined for nine runs scored in the sixth inning. After Maryland scored four, NU scored five runs, capped off by a two-RBI triple by Alex Erro.
Maryland added three more runs in the top of the seventh.
Northwestern made the game even closer in the eighth as Goosenberg drove in Jack Dunn with a single.
