Willie B. Bourbon

Wildcats Top San José State With Walk-Off, 6-5 Victory

3/30/2019 4:09:00 PM | Baseball

EVANSTON, Ill. — Thanks to a walk-off walk by Willie Bourbon, Northwestern topped San José State, 6-5, at Rocky & Berenice Miller Park on Saturday afternoon.

The walk-off win was NU's first such victory this season and marks three-straight wins for the 'Cats.

Senior infielder Jack Dunn had a tremendous game, setting a career high with four hits. He also added three runs scored and two RBI in the contest. Dunn is now hitting a team-best .373.

Junior infielder Alex Erro also had a remarkable game at the plate, going 4-for-5 with a double.

San José State scored first in the contest after loading the bases in the first inning. Hank Christie avoided major damage in the frame, fanning James Shimashita before inducing a pop-out. Jack Colette singled to center field to drive in the Spartan run before a ground out ended the inning.

The Wildcats answered in the bottom of the first inning after back-to-back singles put runners on first and third. First-year Shawn Goosenberg delivered an RBI fielder's choice to equalize the score at 1-1.

Northwestern got its first lead of the game via Goosenberg's second RBI of the game, tying his career high. He drove in Dunn for the second time in the game.

The Spartans re-took the lead with a three-run homer by Kellen Strahm in the fifth inning. SJSU extended the lead with another run in the sixth inning.

Northwestern clawed back with three runs in the sixth inning. With the bases loaded, Willie Bourbon came home to score on a wild pitch, making the score 5-3. Later in the inning, Dunn smacked a two-RBI single up the middle to drive in Anthony Calarco and Casey O'Laughlin to tie up the score.

Ten of Dunn's 17 RBI this season have been with two outs — the most two-out RBI on the Wildcats this season.

The NU bullpen tossed 3.0-shutout innings to end the game, including 2.1-scoreless frames by sophomore Anthony Alepra, who allowed only one hit and fanned two.

The Wildcats strung together three-straight singles to start the bottom of the ninth inning. With one out, Bourbon drew the bases-juiced walk to give NU the victory.

Northwestern is set to play their series finale against San José State on Sunday afternoon at 12 p.m.
