Northwestern Drops Road Contest at No. 22 Michigan

9/24/2017 1:38:00 PM | Men's Soccer

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Sophomore Sean Lynch put the Wildcats on the board in the 66th minute, but it was not enough as Northwestern fell at No. 22 Michigan, 3-1, Sunday afternoon in Big Ten action.

"We prepared well and played to our plan, but gave up a two set pieces which is really difficult to swallow," said head coach Tim Lenahan. "Playing against a team with 10 men for most of the game, we had to find that balance between pushing numbers forward and keeping balanced defensively. Credit to Michigan for playing well with 10, men but I see this as a lost opportunity to steal a hard-earned Big Ten result on the road."

Northwestern tallied 12 shots in the contest compared to Michigan's 11. Elo Ozumba, Mattias Tomasino, John Moderwell and Lynch each recorded two shots.

Robbie White made his second start of the season and made three saves.

Michigan got on the board first when Ivo Cerda headed home a service off a free kick in the 31st minute. It was his second goal of the season. Shortly after the goal Michigan's Francis Atuahene was assessed a red card and the Wolverines played with 10 men for the remainder of the match.

The Wolverines built their lead to 2-0 in the 55th minute off a corner kick.

M. Tomasino orchestrated Northwestern's goal in the 66th minute by playing a through ball to Lynch heading towards net, who finished to the far post. It was the second straight game that Lynch has found the back of the net and Tomasino's second assist of the campaign.

With the clock winding down, White left the net for a Northwestern free kick in Michigan's territory. The Wolverines won possession and were able to score on an empty net to seal the victory.

Northwestern will continue its three-game road swing with a trip to face Maryland on Friday, Sept. 29 at 6 p.m. CT.
