COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Junior Robbie White collected a career-high 10 saves, but Northwestern fell to No. 3 Maryland, 3-0, Friday night in Big Ten action.
"We played a very good team tonight who was at the top of their game," said head coach Tim Lenahan. "I was disappointed in our ability to keep the ball in the first half and if you can't possess the ball against a quality team like Maryland they will make you pay. Positives were that I thought we played better in the second half but the early penalty sealed the game. Robbie White was spectacular in goal in keeping us in the game. We will regroup and get ready for a very good Notre Dame team on Tuesday."
White kept the match clean earlier on by making five saves in the first 20 minutes of action, but the Terrapins were able to break through in the 20th minute when Sebastian Elney scored on a rebounded shot that White pushed away.
The Wildcats' keeper added a three more saves in following 18 minutes of action.
Maryland built its lead to 2-0 in the 39th via a Jake Rozhansky one-timer in the middle of the box.
Maryland continued its offensive pressure early in the second stanza and was able to draw a penalty inside the box at the 49:45 mark. Amar Sejdic converted on the penalty kick opportunity to put the Terrapins up 3-0.
Northwestern drops to 2-8-0 on the campaign and 0-5 in league play, while Maryland improves to 7-0-3 overall and 3-0-2 against Big Ten opponents.
The Wildcats wrap up their three-game road swing on Tuesday, Oct. 3 at No. 7 Notre Dame.
