Northwestern Travels to No. 3 Maryland Friday Night

9/28/2017 5:07:00 PM | Men's Soccer

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern continues a three-game road swing Friday evening when it travels to face No. 3 Maryland in College Park. The match is scheduled to kick off at 6 p.m. CT.

Chicago's Big Ten Team fell at then-No. 22 Michigan on Sunday afternoon, 3-1. Goals on either side of halftime gave the hosts a 2-0 lead before midfielder Sean Lynch recorded his second goal in as many games. A pass from Mattias Tomasino opened up the Wolverine defense, and Lynch placed the ball in the far corner with his first touch to cut the deficit to one in the 66th minute.

With the Wildcats searching for a late equalizer, goalkeeper Robbie White joined the attack for a corner kick. Michigan was able to break on a counter attack and scored on the empty net to seal the game.

NU held the advantage in shots for the match, taking 12 while Michigan notched 11. White recorded three saves in the contest.

Lynch's goal gave him a team-best five points on the campaign. The assist was the second on the year for Tomasino, good for first on the team along with Camden Buescher.

Maryland enters the match with an overall record of 6-0-3, including a 2-0-2 mark in the Big Ten. The Terrapins are coming off consecutive draws, including a scoreless draw at No. 4 Michigan State last Friday and a 1-1 decision at UMBC on Tuesday. Maryland's last home loss came in October of 2015.

Northwestern has battle the Terps three times in program history. The first encounter came in Evanston in 2014, which the 'Cats won, 3-2, just one minute into the overtime period. Their second matchup came a year later, when NU prevailed, 2-1, over the then-No. 13 Terrapins with an overtime goal from Mike Roberge. Maryland has not lost a home conference match since that meeting.

Most recently, the sides faced off last season at Martin Stadium and Maryland won, 4-0, en route to an undefeated season that included both a Big Ten regular season title and conference tournament championship.

Friday's match will be the second of three consecutive contests against ranked teams on the road for Northwestern. After facing the third-ranked Terrapins, the Wildcats will travel to face No. 7 Notre Dame on Tuesday.
