Northwestern Scores Three First-Half Goals to Beat Western Illinois

EVANSTON, Ill. — Junior Camden Buescher tallied four points on a goal and two assists to lead Northwestern over Western Illinois, 3-2, Monday afternoon at Martin Stadium.
Buescher was joined in the goal column by Drew Viscomi (21') and Elo Ozumba (41')
Northwestern improves to 3-9-0 on the season with the victory and remains a perfect 3-0 at home against nonconference opponents this season. Western Illinois drops to 4-6-0 overall on the campaign.
The Wildcats' offense exploded in the opening period with its first three-goal half of the season. It was the first time Northwestern has netted three goals in a half since Aug. 31, 2014 against Hofstra.
Viscomi put the #B1GCats on the board first in the 21st minute. Buescher sent a long pass from midfield to a streaking Viscomi, who controlled the ball and beat the goalie to the far side. The goal was the first of his career.
The 'Cats continued to maintain pressure on the offensive end in the first half and put a pair of goals on the board in the final five minutes of the frame. Buescher created the goal once again when he chipped a pass into the box for Ozumba, who found the back of the net for his first goal of the season.
It was the first time a Northwestern player had two assists in a game since Nathan Dearth tallied a pair against Michigan on Sept. 25, 2016.
Ozumba drew a foul inside the Western Illinois box with 53 seconds remaining in the half. Buescher stepped up and drilled home the penalty kick to give the home side a commanding 3-0 lead heading into the break.
The Wildcats outshot the Leathernecks, 8-6, in the first half and White racked up four of his total six saves.
Western Illinois got on the board in the 57th minute when Gavin Nevshemal put a shot on net that White turned away, but Drew Whalen was there for the rebound and the score.
The Leathernecks made it a one-goal contest in the 80th minute when Fernando Pacheco scored on a header, but the Wildcat defense held strong for the final ten minutes.
Northwestern returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 11, when it travels to DePaul for a match at 3 p.m. CT.
