Chicago's B1G Team Tops DePaul, 2-0

CHICAGO — Northwestern played the final 50 minutes a man down due to a red card in the 40th minute, but second-half goals from Camden Buescher and Mac Mazzola gave Northwestern a 2-0 win over DePaul Wednesday afternoon at Wish Field.

The victory gave Northwestern its second straight win and improved the Wildcats to 4-9-0 on the season. Chicago's Big Ten Team is now 17-11-1 all-time against DePaul. The Blue Demons fall to 4-7-1 on the campaign.

Francisco Tomasino earned the start in net for the Wildcats and picked up his first shutout of the season. Tomasino faced 17 shots and made four saves.

The first half was a physical battle with 18 fouls called and four yellow cards and one red card handed out. John Moderwel was sent off for Northwestern in the 40t minute, leaving the 'Cats down a man for the remainder of the game.

The Wildcats did not fall back and pack in tight during the second half. Instead Northwestern chose its opportunities and was rewarded when a foul was called inside the Blue Demons' penalty box in the 52nd minute to set up Buescher for a penalty kick. The junior went right back up the middle with his kick and scored.

The goal put Northwestern in front, 1-0, and was Buescher's second penalty-kick goal in as many games.

Northwestern struck again in the 68th minute. First year Drew Viscomi dribbled himself open down the nearside of the field and sent a cross into the box that was eventually won by Mac Mazzola. Mazzola used a cutback move to put the ball on his right root and finished to the left side of the net.

The goal was Mazzola's second of his career.

Northwestern is 2-0 in Chicago derby games this season after topping UIC, 1-0, on Sept. 20.

The Wildcats return home to Martin Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 15, to host Rutgers at noon.
