Maryland Edges Northwestern in Overtime, 62-56

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — It was a classic Big Ten battle in College Park on Tuesday night as Maryland edged Northwestern in overtime, 62-56.

The Wildcats fall to 15-5 on the campaign and 3-4 in conference play, while the Terrapins improve to 17-2 overall and 6-1 in the Big Ten.

Northwestern had a trio of players score in double figures with Aaron Falzon scoring a team-high 13 points and Bryant McIntosh and Dererk Pardon chipping in 12 and 11 points, respectively. Maryland's Melo Trimble led all scorers with 18 points.

In addition to scoring 12 points, McIntosh tallied four assists, which moves the sophomore into the top 10 for career assists at Northwestern with 287.

The 'Cats set the tone early in the contest by jumping out to a 14-9  lead with Pardon coming off the bench to score six points before the first media timeout. Pardon's final tally of 11 points marks the second straight game that the freshman has scored double-digit points and third time in his young career.

Heart and hustle were the storylines for the Wildcats in the remainder of the first half, forcing Maryland to turn the ball over nine times and crashing the glass to grab seven offensive rebounds. The Wildcats forced Maryland to turn the ball over 16 times on the night, a season-high mark for a Northwestern oppenent.

Maryland didn't claim its first lead of the game until 19 minutes into the contest when Trimble knocked down his only 3-pointer of the game. McIntosh ended a 10-0 run by the Terps with an underhand layup in the final moments of the half that sent the 'Cats into the locker room trailing by a basket, 31-29.

After Maryland posted an 8-2 run to begin the second half, head coach Chris Collins burned a timeout to slow the Terrapins momentum. The strategy proved to be effective. Falzon drilled one of his three 3-pointer's out of the break and sparked a run of seven straight points for the 'Cats that cut Maryland's lead to 39-34.

A Falzon basket with 8:23 left to play in the second half gave Northwestern its first lead of the second half, 43-41, and set off a back-and-forth series of scoring between both teams.

With Northwestern boasting a four-point lead, 47-43, a Trimble jumper and a Jake Layman 3-pointer put Maryland back in front with 4:43 remaining. McIntosh knocked down the front-end of a pair of free throws to knot the game at 48-48.

Neither team scored over the final 2:34 of regulation.

Maryland jumped out to a three-point lead in overtime, but Falzon answered with a running layup in the lane that cut Maryland's lead, 51-50.

Senior Tre Demps found a cutting Joey van Zegeren in the lane to give the 'Cats their first lead of overtime, 54-53.

Diamond Stone scored five straight points in the final 1:34 of overtime for Maryland to put the game out of reach.

Northwestern returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 23, when it travels to Bloomington, Ind., to face No. 25/23 Indiana. Tip-off against the Hoosiers is set for 11 a.m. Central time.
