EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern men's tennis will continue its homestand this weekend as it gets set to host IU Indy and Cleveland State in a doubleheader on Saturday at Combe Tennis Center. Action is scheduled to start with IU Indy at 10 a.m. CT, with Cleveland State following after at 5:30 p.m. CT.
The Wildcats are coming off a 1-2 opening weekend that ended with a 4-0 sweep against Youngstown State. Despite losses in the opening matches, both Carter Pate and Cyrus Mahjoob picked up their first singles wins of the season against ranked opponents; Pate defeated Vanderbilt's No. 62 Pablo Martinez Gomez in three sets, while Mahjoob took down No. 122 Hamza El Amine in straight sets against Louisville.
IU Indy enters the weekend with an 0-1 record to start the season after falling to Eastern Kentucky this past weekend. Saturday's meeting will be the eighth in the last ten years between the two teams, with Northwestern sweeping each of the last seven, all of which occurred in Evanston. In their most recent meeting last February, the 'Cats downed the Jaguars 7-0.
Cleveland State (3-1) is riding a three-match win streak after defeating DePaul, 4-3, on Friday afternoon. Following a season-opening loss to Penn State last Saturday, the Vikings defeated both Toledo and Edinboro in a doubleheader on Monday. They'll take on the 'Cats for the first time on Saturday evening.
After finishing up this weekend's matches, the 'Cats will head south to Tuscaloosa where they are set to play Alabama at 6 p.m. CT on Friday, January 30th.
