Wildcats Take Down No. 20 RedHawks, 5-1

9/14/2025 1:45:00 PM | Field Hockey

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - After a gritty overtime victory at Louisville on Friday, the No. 1 Northwestern field hockey team (6-0) found its groove, defeating No. 20 Miami (OH) (3-2), 5-1, on Sunday morning. The Wildcats collected their 40th consecutive regular season win behind the offensive lead from Ashley Sessa and Ilse Tromp, who each scored two goals in the ranked road matchup.
NU got off to a strong start with early scoring in the third and sixth minutes. With the first shot of the game, Olivia Bent-Cole got on the board, notching her first goal of the season with an assist from Sessa.

Returning to the field after sitting out a game, Sessa wasn't far behind with a goal of her own, set up by Aerin Krys to extend NU's lead to 2-0 not even halfway through the first quarter.

The second got started with a RedHawk penalty corner, which translated to a seventeenth minute goal by Breta Mata. Both teams took two more shots in the half, but the ranked matchup headed into the break with NU leading 2-1.

Returning for the second half, Bent-Cole took a shot, but Miami got a defensive save from Mata. The graduate back is the lone RedHawk to appear in the 2025 National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Preseason Watchlist.

Sessa and Laura Salamanca each took shots, leading up to a penalty corner by Grace Schulze. Tromp translated the corner for her second goal of the season. In the final 15 minutes, NU took five shots, two of which resulted in goals from Sessa and Tromp. Both earning their second of the day, the 'Cats' lead was pushed to 5-1, sealing the eventual victory. With the win, Northwestern improved to 6-0 for an undefeated start to the season, also good for their sixth straight ranked victory.

Krys and Sessa each earned two assists on the day, while Maddie Zimmer and Schulze both notched one. Goalkeeper Juliana Boon tallied her sixth win, with one save and one goal allowed. The 'Cats outshot their opponent on-goal 12-2, keeping the RedHawks well below their 2024 average of 9.23 per game.

NU returns to the turf next weekend, with another set of road non-conference games. Northwestern takes on Delaware on Friday, Sept. 19, at 3 p.m. CT, before heading to Villanova to play on Sunday, Sept. 21, at 11 a.m. CT.
