EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern women's soccer will close out the first week of the regular season with a Sunday night matchup at Illinois State. Due to excessive heat in the forecast, kickoff from Normal, Ill., previously scheduled for 12 p.m. CT, has been pushed back to 7 p.m. CT on ESPN+.
In Thursday's lidlifter, Northwestern blanked Loyola Chicago 2-0 to win its fourth straight season opener and fifth in a row against the Ramblers.
NU went ahead in the 41st minute on Mary Stroebel's first career goal, assisted by Selma Sol Sigurjonsdottir (first career assist) and Caterina Regazzoni. In the 86th minute, Alex Fallon found Kennedy Roesch, who doubled the Wildcat lead to put the game on ice.
First-year Nyamma Nelson collected her first career shutout on three saves. Nelson is the first first-year in program history to record a clean sheet in their debut.
Six Wildcats (Nyamma Nelson, Liz Cardwell, Mary Stroebel, Audrey Alberts, Selma Sol Sigurjonsdottir and Gabby Anderson), including five first-years, made their collegiate debut in the win.
The Wildcats return 65% of goals scored from 2024, which ranks fourth among all Big Ten programs. In 2024, Northwestern first-years accounted for 27.6% (5,191/18,810) of total minutes played and 40% (8/20) of total goals scored.
Senior midfielder Caterina Regazzoni, sophomore forward Kennedy Roesch and sophomore forward/midfielder Alex Fallon were named to the 2025 Big Ten Women's Soccer Players to Watch List. The honor marks the third consecutive season Regazzoni has been named to the list, while Roesch and Fallon are making their first appearances.
In her rookie campaign, first-year Kennedy Roesch tallied six goals, the most by a Wildcat first-year since 2010 (Kate Allen, six). The 'Cats are 5-0-2 in games that Roesch finds the back of the net.
Northwestern will continue its season-opening road swing at 2024 College Cup participant Duke on Thursday, August 21 at 5 p.m. CT on ACCNX. The 'Cats will open up the home slate against Kent State on Sunday, August 24 at 4 p.m. CT at Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium.
