NORMAL, Ill. – Northwestern women's soccer improved to 2-0 for the first time since 2018 with a 1-0 victory at Illinois State on Sunday night at Adelaide Street Field. NU's two season-opening road wins marks its first time beginning a season with a pair of road wins since 2012.
Caterina Regazzoni delivered the opening goal of the game, redirecting a shot from Alex Fallon past Illinois State goalkeeper Madi Valenti to open the scoring in the 49th minute. Regazzoni has tallied a point in each of Northwestern's games in 2025, assisting on Mary Stroebel's first half goal in Thursday's season opening win at Loyola Chicago. Regazzoni's goal stood as the game-winning goal, the sixth game-winner of her career, fifth-most in NU program history. Fallon's assist gives her two on the 2025 campaign.
Nelson protected the Wildcat lead with a career-high seven saves, earning her second clean sheet in just the second start of her career.
The Wildcats have recorded clean sheets in consecutive games for the first time since September 5-8, 2024 and back-to-back road shutouts for the first time since October 13-23, 2022.
The 'Cats outshot the Redbirds 21-10, NU's most shots since recording 28 shots against Penn State on October 15, 2023.
Northwestern now leads the all-time series against the Redbirds 9-3, including a 4-2 mark in Normal.
The Wildcats will return to action on Thursday, August 21 at No. 4 Duke at 5 p.m. CT on ACCNX.
