‘Cats win first national championship in program history

CARLSBAD, Calif. (May 21, 2025) – Dianna Lee made a pressure-packed par putt on the 18th hole to secure the Northwestern University Women's Golf team its first national championship in program history, capping off the Wildcats' thrilling 3-2 win over No. 1 Stanford on Wednesday in the NCAA National Championship Match in Carlsbad, Calif.

Competing for a sixth consecutive day on the North Course at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa, the 'Cats were led by individual victories from Lee (one-up), Lauryn Nguyen (one-up), and Hsin Tai Lin (3&2).

For the second time in as many days, Lee clinched the win for Northwestern in Southern California. After seeing the Cardinal's Andrea Revuelta rally back to trim a three-hole deficit down to one entering the 16th hole, the San Diego, Calif. native held serve, matching her Stanford counterpart across the final three holes, a stretch highlighted by her aforementioned putt for par that set off a wild celebration for the 'Cats.

Nguyen wrote the final chapter in a storied Northwestern career, edging the 'Cats in front following a scintillating one-up triumph over Paula Martín Sampedro, the eighth-ranked collegiate golfer. In a nip-and-tuck battle that saw Sampedro pull even heading to the 18th hole, Nguyen provided the exclamation point, draining a putt for birdie to seal a one-up victory.

Hsin Tai Lin capped off an outstanding first-year campaign with a dominant showing en route to securing Northwestern's first point of the day. After dropping her opening hole to Meja Örtengren, Hsin Tai Lin rattled off wins on three straight holes, building a lead she would not relinquish, ultimately posting a 3&2 triumph. The Taoyuan, Taiwan native was also instrumental in defeating Arkansas in the quarterfinal, winning her match against Razorback Maria Jose Marin, the recently crowned NCAA individual champion.

All five of Stanford's players are currently ranked in the top 20 in the country. Undefeated in stroke play this season, the Cardinal also dominated this week's competition, finishing 21 shots ahead of the field after 72 holes. That didn't phase five Wildcats – three from California, one from Taiwan, and a senior from Seattle that everyone was playing for – who banded together to bring home a championship for head coach Emily Fletcher and assistant coach Beth Miller, a tandem who have worked side by side for 17 years. Teammates Megan Meng and Jiayi Wang were arm-in-arm with their fellow 'Cats on the 18th hole.

In match play – inclusive of the quarterfinals, semifinals, and final – all five members of the team won at least one match, with every member contributing to the championship. In the semifinals, it was Ashley Yun, Elise Lee & Dianna Lee who won their matches. The quarterfinals saw Elise Lee, Nguyen and Hsin Tai Lin secure victories.

The Wildcats, who were ranked No. 11 nationally entering the tournament, defeated No. 6 Arkansas and No. 2 Oregon to reach the championship round. This marks the 12th team national championship in Northwestern history.

Northwestern has won two national titles this academic year, as the Wildcats Field Hockey team won the national crown 5-0 over St. Joe's on Nov. 24 in Ann Arbor, Mich.
