MADISON, Wis. - No. 39 Northwestern Women's Tennis (7-5, 0-0 Big Ten) is set to open Big Ten play this weekend on the road, taking on No. 17 Wisconsin (8-1, 1-0 Big Ten) in the conference opener on Friday before facing No. 60 Minnesota (8-6, 0-1 Big Ten) in Minneapolis on Sunday. First serve in Madison is set for 5:00 p.m. CT, while Sunday's match is scheduled to begin at noon CT.
Northwestern is coming off an off week between non-conference and Big Ten action. The last time the 'Cats saw the court, they knocked off then-No. 30 Kansas on the road in Lawrence on February 23, clinching a 4-3 victory with singles wins at the No. 3, 4, 5 and 6 spots. Following her match-clinching victory at No. 6 singles in that outing, Neena Feldman was named Big Ten Player of the Week on February 26. The win completed a perfect 7-0 non-conference singles performance for the sophomore.
Feldman was one of two Wildcats to finish non-conference play undefeated in singles action. Senior Sydney Pratt also capped off an unblemished winter with victories against then-No. 31 Vanderbilt and Kansas, improving her singles record to 8-0 during dual action. Pratt's non-conference campaign also included seven doubles victories alongside partner Erica Jessel, including five straight between January 26 and February 9.
The 'Cats will face a tough task immediately in Big Ten play when they visit Wisconsin, who improved to No. 17 in the latest ITA team rankings. The Badgers hold an 8-1 record ahead of the weekend, with their only loss coming to then-No. 9 North Carolina on January 26. Since then, Wisconsin has won seven straight, including its conference opener against Minnesota. They boast a ranked doubles duo and two ranked individuals this week: Taylor Cataldi and Ellison Reynoldson sit at No. 62 as a pairing, while Cataldi ranks 109th individually and Maria Sholokhova improved to No. 5 as well.
Heading into the matchup, Northwestern leads the all-time series 44-14 against Wisconsin, including victories in four of the last six meetings.
On Sunday, Northwestern will face the 60th-ranked Gophers. After falling to Wisconsin at the end of February and sweeping a doubleheader last Saturday, Minnesota sits at 8-6 overall so far this dual season. The 'Cats will look to extend their winning streak against the Gophers to seven straight after winning each of the last six, dating back to the 2020-21 season. Overall, the 'Cats have dominated the all-time series 46-6 against the Gophers.
After their trip north, the Wildcats will return to Combe Tennis Center for their Big Ten home opener next Friday, March 14, when they're set to host Nebraska. That match will begin at 4:30 p.m. CT.
