Wildcats Welcome Cleveland State to Close Season-Opening Homestand

EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern men's basketball caps off its season-opening three-game homestand inside Welsh-Ryan Arena against Cleveland State on Monday, Nov. 10, at 7:30 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcast on BTN with Mike Hall (play-by-play) and Shon Morris (analyst) on the call and can be heard on WGN Radio 720 and SiriusXM Channel 372 with the Voice of the 'Cats, Dave Eanet (play-by-play), and Billy McKinney (analyst).

The Wildcats (2-0) used a 45-point first half to dominate Boston University, 76-52, on Friday night. Northwestern went on both a 16-3 run and a 14-2 run in the first half to take a 19-point lead at halftime. In addition to tallying 20 assists to just five turnovers, the Wildcats held the Terriers to 19-of-58 (32.8%) shooting from the field. One of the Big Ten's best defenses of late, Northwestern improved to 45-4 (.918) over the last four seasons when surrendering 65 or fewer points, which is the best win percentage in the league over that span (min. 40 games). The Wildcats have started 2-0 in 10 of the last 12 seasons and aim to improve to 3-0 for the fourth time in the last five seasons.

Senior forward Nick Martinelli posted a game-high 20 points with nine rebounds, while shooting 7-of-12 from the floor. Junior guard Jayden Reid added 17 points and a game-high eight assists on 8-of-14 shooting from the field. Junior forward Arrinten Page stuffed the stat sheet with seven points, seven rebounds, two assists, three steals and two blocks. Making his season debut, sophomore guard Angelo Ciaravino registered nine points and three rebounds on 4-of-6 shooting from the field.

Sullivan-Ubben Head Men's Basketball Coach Chris Collins is in his 13th season guiding the Wildcats. He has 196 career wins in Evanston, and is four shy of joining Naismith Hall of Famer Dutch Lonborg (1927-50) as the only head coaches in program history to reach 200 victories.

Martinelli received significant preseason attention ahead of his final year in Evanston. The 6-foot-7 forward was named to the Naismith Player of the Year Watch List, the Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award Watch List, and was a 2025-26 Preseason All-Big Ten selection. Last season, Martinelli became the fourth Wildcat to lead the Big Ten in scoring, averaging 20.5 points per game in 2024-25. His average marked the highest by a Northwestern player since Evan Eschmeyer (21.7, 1997-98). Martinelli's 676 total points broke the school's single-season scoring record, previously held by John Shurna (661, 2011-12).

Martinelli is the fifth-leading returning scorer in all of college basketball this season, and is second among all scorers who are returning to the school they played at in 2024-25, joining Markus Burton (Notre Dame, 21.3 ppg). The Glenview, Ill., product has scored 15+ points in 20 straight games dating back to last season, the longest active streak by a high-major player in the country. Martinelli has scored in double figures in 28 straight games, the longest streak by a Northwestern player since Evan Eschmeyer (1997-99, 65).

Transfer acquisitions Page and Reid have made an instant impact for the Wildcats. Page, who comes to Northwestern after stops at USC and Cincinnati, has averaged 12.5 points and 9.5 rebounds. Posting 18 points and 12 rebounds in the season opener against Mercyhurst, he became the first Wildcat since at least 2004 to register a double-double in his Northwestern debut. Coming from South Florida, Reid has posted averages of 12.5 points and 5.5 assists per game.

Through two games this season, Northwestern has held opponents to 49.5 points per game, the lowest mark through two games to open a season since the 2008-09 campaign. The Wildcats' two opponents have shot a combined 37-of-118 (31.4%) this season.

The Wildcats are set to face off with Cleveland State for the third time in program history after matchups in 1983 and 1984. The teams split the meetings, with Northwestern winning 63-51 at home in 1983 but falling 66-54 on the road in 1984.

The Vikings (1-1) have won 20 or more games in each of the last four seasons. The team's 23 wins last season marked the program's most since the 2010-11 season (27). First-year head coach Rob Summers won his first career game on Thursday night, a 71-70 triumph over Capital. The Vikings are one of just six Division I teams with an entirely new roster and one of ten teams in the country with zero returning points from 2024-25.

The Wildcats play their first game on the road when they travel to face crosstown rival DePaul on Friday, Nov. 14, at 7:30 p.m. CT. The game will air on truTV and WGN Radio 720.
