MADISON, Wisc. – Northwestern's swimming and diving team returned to action on Saturday afternoon after a trip up I-90 to face the Wisconsin Badgers. The men's swimming team won eight of their races and earned a 163.5-136.5 victory. The women's team were defeated 205.5-93.5.
"It was great day of racing for the Wildcats today," said director of swimming and diving Rachel Stratton-Mills. "The men continued down their path to the Big Tens by beating another conference rival. The men are showing that on any given day, they are ready to step up and race and dive against any opponent. We still have work to be done this season, but being undefeated in our dual meet schedule is something these men can be proud of. Our women faced a tough opponent in Wisconsin and used it to put up multiple season best and lifetime best times. It was a step as we move through the season."
The 'Cats have had an impressive start to their season with the men's team 6-0 (2-0 in dual meets versus Big Ten opponents) and the women's team 4-2. The last time the Wildcats men's team defeated Wisconsin head-to-head was November 15, 2013.
Diego Nosack led the team with two individual victories. He won the 200 fly (1:43.75) and the 500 free (4:22.62).
The 'Cats got off to a good start with the men winning the 400 medley relay (3:07.93). The team of David Gerchik, Tyler Lu, Stuart Seymour and Cade Duncan earned the victory.
In the 100 yard backstroke, Seymour (45.93) and Gerchik (47.00) finished one-two. That was followed by senior Tyler Lu (53.75) winning the 100 yard breaststroke.
Duncan (42.55) then won the 100 free, with teammate Connor Schuster (44.43) finishing in second place. Gerchik (1:42.40) took the 200 backstroke, with Wildcat Oliver Kós (1:45.51) the runner-up.
In the final men's swimming event of the day, Northwestern's A-team of Seymour, Duncan, Schuster and Gal Shlegel – the team's newest member – won in 1:19.05.
The women's performance was highlighted by a lifetime best in the 200 breaststroke by sophomore Maggie Papanicholas (2:11.57). A number of first-years, including Grey Davis, Claire Mehok, Lilly Mehok, Sophie Martin and Zoe Nordmann had strong showings for the Wildcats. Lindsay Ervin had two impressive second place finishes: In the 50 free, her time of 22.55 was just behind Wisconsin's Hailey Tierney (22.32) and in the 100 free her 49.14 was runner-up to Badger Abby Wanezek's 48.84.
The Badgers, whose program celebrated Senior Day, are led by two-time Olympian Phoebe Bacon (Paris 2024, 4th place finish, 200 back and Tokyo 2020, 5th place finish, 200 back). Her recent accolades include 2024 200 back NCAA Champion, 2024 Big Ten Swimmer of the Championship, 2024 First Team All-Big Ten and 2023 Big Ten Swimmer of the Year. Today, Bacon won the 100 back (51,04), the 200 IM (1:55.86) and contributed to winning the 400 medley relay.
