Wildcats Snatch 1-0 Victory with Last-Quarter Goal Against Boston College

9/8/2024 5:12:00 PM | Field Hockey

EVANSTON, Ill. - In a tightly contested battle at Lakeside Field, the No. 1 ranked Wildcats earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Boston College. The Wildcats broke the scoreless tie in the 57th minute, with Ashley Sessa delivering the game-winning goal off a well-executed penalty corner. This goal marks Sessa's second of the season and helped keep Northwestern's undefeated start to the year intact.

Throughout the game, Northwestern's defense was on full display, and its control of the match's tempo was pivotal. The Wildcats dominated possession early, pressuring the Boston College defense with multiple penalty corners, including their first within the opening eight minutes. However, the Eagles' defense remained resolute, as goalkeeper denied attempts from Maddie Zimmer and Ilse Tromp.

Northwestern's offensive persistence was evident from the outset, with Lauren Wadas and Ashley Sessa leading the charge up front. Despite several near chances, the Wildcats were unable to find the back of the net in the first half. The team's ability to sustain pressure while maintaining defensive solidity, however, ensured that Boston College posed little threat on the counterattack.

On the other side of the field, Northwestern's defense was rock solid. The Wildcats stifled Boston College's attack, allowing few opportunities. Goalie Annabel Skubisz was sharp, making timely saves to keep the Eagles off the board. Her key save late in the third quarter on a shot by Boston College was crucial in preserving the shutout.

As the game entered its final quarter, the Wildcats ramped up the pressure. After another defensive stand that denied Boston College back-to-back penalty corners, Northwestern earned their chance. With just over three minutes remaining, the Wildcats executed a decisive penalty corner play. Maddie Zimmer sent the ball to Lauren Wadas, who delivered a perfect pass to Sessa near the right post. The sophomore redirected it past the Eagles' goalkeeper to give Northwestern the breakthrough they had been searching for.

With another strong team performance, Northwestern remains unbeaten and continues its dominant start to the 2024 season. The Wildcats' next challenge comes against Louisville as they look to build on their momentum and maintain their position at the top of the national rankings.
