Bearcats hold off Northwestern for 21-15 victory

EVANSTON, Ill. (February 16, 2024) – Troy Fisher picked up an impressive ranked win, highlighting four Wildcat victories this evening as visiting Binghamton (9-3, 7-2 EIWA) battled past Northwestern (0-8, 0-6 B1G) by a 21-15 final inside Welsh-Ryan Arena.

Wrestling at 184 pounds, Fisher provided fireworks in his showdown with No. 11 Jacob Nolan.  Locked in a 1-1 deadlock with just over 90 seconds remaining in the third period, Fisher powered through Nolan, securing a takedown to surge in front, 4-1.  Following an escape by the Bearcat that made it 4-2, the Garden Plain, Kan. native put away any hopes of a comeback with 45 seconds remaining, making the most of a single-leg attack to add insurance en route to a 7-3 decision win.

No. 21 Trevor Chumbley rolled to his fourth win by technical fall of the year in a 157-pound tilt with Carter Baer.  Following a first period that saw both wrestlers struggle to gain the upper hand, Chumbley took full advantage of his final attack of the frame, wrapping up Baer's right leg to record a takedown with just one second remaining and take a 3-0 lead.  He stepped on the accelerator from the that point forward, racking up four takedowns in the third period alone to put the exclamation point on a 19-3 victory.

Aiden Vandenbush picked up his second major decision of 2023-24 against Michael Zarif at 149 pounds.  With the score knotted up at 0-0 midway through the first period, Vandenbush willed his way to a takedown and four-point near fall, building a 7-0 lead on the way to winning by an 11-0 final.

In a 125-pound clash with Carson Wagner, Massey Odiotti battled back from an early deficit to score a decision win.  Trailing 3-1 after the first period, Odiotti tallied a pair of second-period takedowns to go in front, 8-4.  The first-year tacked on a takedown with just under 20 seconds left in the third period, closing out an 11-5 win.

Northwestern wraps up the regular season portion of its 2023-24 schedule on Sunday afternoon when it hosts Indiana and Illinois in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
