Illinois downed Northwestern on criteria, 21-20, in day’s closing dual
EVANSTON, Ill. (February 18, 2024) – Trevor Chumbley, Troy Fisher, and Evan Bates enjoyed 2-0 days as Northwestern wrestling (1-9, 1-7 B1G) split a pair of duals to close the 2023-24 regular season this afternoon inside Welsh-Ryan Arena. The Wildcats opened action with a 19-18 win over No. 23 Indiana before dropping a narrow 21-20 decision to Illinois on criteria in the finale.
Chumbley impressed in his 157-pound clash with the Hoosiers' Zack Rotkvich. After building a sizable lead entering the third period, the St. Charles, Ill. native closed the show, securing the fall just 25 seconds in. Chumbley wrapped up his third bonus-point win of the weekend against Illinois' Logan Swaw, rolling to a 22-6 win by technical fall (4:55).
Fresh off picking up a top-15 upset in Friday's clash with Binghamton, Fisher (184 pounds) carried over momentum, opening the day with a 7-4 decision over Roman Rogotzke. Locked in a 1-1 stalemate in sudden victory with the Fighting Illini's Dylan Connell later in the afternoon, Fisher powered through for the bout's deciding takedown with just over 30 seconds gone in the period to secure a 4-1 decision.
Bates (197 pounds) turned in a workmanlike effort in his clash with No. 33 Gabe Sollars to begin the afternoon, riding out Sollars for the entire third period on his way to a 2-0 win. He was on the attack from the opening whistle against Isiah Pettigrew, piling up seven takedowns as part of victory by technical fall (6:38), 22-6.
Massey Odiotti (125 pounds) and Dedrick Navarro (133 pounds) helped the 'Cats race out the gate against Indiana, both picking up victories. After falling into an early 3-0 hole, Odiotti rallied back to take a 4-3 edge at the end of the opening frame before adding takedowns in both the second and third periods to cap a 12-4 major decision. Navarro couldn't have scripted a better showing in his dual meet debut, scoring a takedown just eight seconds into the match en route to winning by decision, 10-4.
Sam Cartella (149 pounds) and Jack Jessen (285 pounds) came out on top against Illinois. Cartella surged to his second Big Ten bonus-point win in as many appearances, jumping all over Will Baysingar from the onset in a 12-3 major decision. Jessen started fast against Peter Marinopoulos, putting up a pair of first-period takedowns as part of a 13-7 victory.
Northwestern will now turn its attention towards the postseason, which opens with the 2024 Big Ten Championships, March 9-10, in College Park, Md.
