MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- Northwestern men's tennis will hit the road for back-to-back match-ups in Tennessee this weekend. The 'Cats will first take on MTSU on Friday at 5 p.m., then they'll head to Nashville to take on Vanderbilt on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
The 5-6 Wildcats are coming off a doubleheader sweep last Sunday in Evanston, where they defeated Clemson 6-1, then beat IUPUI 4-0. The 'Cats combined for five ranked victories during the weekend, which also included a narrow 3-4 loss to No. 21 Alabama. Greyson Casey and Presley Thieneman defeated Alabama's No. 45 doubles pairing ahead of singles victories for Thieneman and Goli over No. 74 and No. 115 respectively. On Sunday, Thieneman notched his second ranked take-down, beating Clemson's No. 111 Noa Vukadin, to go with Gleb Blekher and Felix Nordby's defeat of No. 33 Vukadin/Smith.
The duo of ranked victories were part of a 6-0 weekend for Thieneman, earning him Big Ten Player of the Week honors on Wednesday. The senior enters play on Friday with a 7-3 individual record and a 5-4 mark at doubles. All five doubles wins have come when partnered with Casey; the duo owns a 5-2 record so far.
They'll begin the weekend against a 6-4 MTSU squad that has won two of their last three, including a victory over No. 22 Mississippi State on Feb. 2. From there, they'll take on the 7-1 Vanderbilt Commodores. Vanderbilt's only loss this season came at the hands of Ohio State on Jan. 27.
This weekend is the first of two straight on the road for the 'Cats. Following action at Vanderbilt, Northwestern will prepare to head to Cambridge next weekend for a rematch with No. 8 Harvard, who defeated them in the final of the ITA Kickoff last month.
