1/16/2024 11:08:00 AM | Men's Basketball

EVANSTON, Ill. – After splitting a Big Ten road trip, Northwestern men's basketball returns home to Welsh-Ryan Arena to take on Maryland at 8 p.m. CT on Wednesday, Jan. 17. Brandon Gaudin (play-by-play) and Robbie Hummel (analyst) will have the call on BTN, while Dave Eanet (play-by-play) and Billy McKinney (analyst) will have the radio call on ESPN 1000 WMVP and SiriusXM Channel 372.

Northwestern is 12-4 (3-2 B1G) through the first 16 games of the season for the second straight campaign, posting that mark or better for the fourth time in Sullivan-Ubben Head Men's Basketball Coach Chris Collins' tenure (2022-23, 2016-17, 2015-16).

Last time out, the Wildcats took No. 15 Wisconsin to the wire, falling 71-63 at the Kohl Center in Madison on Saturday, Jan. 13. Boo Buie led all Wildcats with 22 points, reaching the 20-plus point mark for the eighth time this season, the most 20-plus point games through 16 games in a season by a Wildcat since John Shurna recorded nine in 2010-11.

Three of NU's next four games are at Welsh-Ryan Arena, where the Wildcats have won five of their last six games dating back to last season and boast a 21-6 record over the last two seasons.

Buie's 526 career assists rank third in school history, trailing Michael "Juice" Thompson's 528 assists for second place. Buie's 229 career 3-point field goals made ranks fifth in Wildcat history, trailing Drew Crawford's 232 career 3-pointers for fourth place.

The Albany, N.Y. native ranks fifth in the Big Ten in both points (18.3) and assists (4.9) per game. He is the only high major player in the country averaging 18-plus points and 4.9-plus assists per game.

Brooks Barnhizer is the only high major player in the country posting 13.0-plus points, 6.9-plus rebounds, and 1.8-plus steals per game. Since 1992-93, only three Big Ten players have posted those numbers for an entire season since 1992-93: Glenn Robinson (Purdue, 1992-93), Ethan Happ (Wisconsin, 2016-17), and Ryan Bowen (1997-98, Iowa).

Wednesday will mark the 17th overall meeting in the all-time series between the 'Cats and Terps and the 15th as conference foes. Maryland holds a 12-4 advantage, with the two teams splitting the last four meetings.

Maryland (11-6, 3-3 B1G) enters Wednesday night's contest fresh off a 76-67 upset win over No. 9 Illinois in Champaign. Big Ten Player of the Week Jahmir Young leads the Terrapins, averaging 19.9 points and 4.4 assists per game.

Northwestern hits the road again when it travels to Lincoln, Neb. for a Saturday matchup with the Cornhuskers. Tipoff from Pinnacle Bank Arena is set for 1:15 p.m. CT on Saturday, Jan. 20 on BTN and WGN Radio 720.
