EVANSTON, Ill. – After a week off, the Northwestern men's basketball team returns to action for an afternoon matchup against Detroit Mercy at 1 p.m. CT on Sunday, Dec. 10, inside Welsh-Ryan Arena. The contest will air on B1G+ with Connor Onion (play-by-play) and Matthew Placzek (analyst) on the call, while Dave Eanet (play-by-play) and Billy McKinney (analyst) will have the radio call on WGN Radio 720 and SiriusXM Channel 388.
The Wildcats, who are receiving votes in the AP Poll for the first time this season, are 6-1 overall and will look to improve to 7-1 for the first time since 2015-16, and 6-0 at home for the second time in the last three seasons.
Last time out, Northwestern became the seventh program since 2010-11 to defeat an AP No. 1 team in back-to-back seasons, knocking off No. 1 Purdue 92-88 in overtime before a sold-out crowd in Evanston on Dec. 1. The Wildcats are the third program to ever defeat the same AP No. 1 opponent at home in consecutive seasons, and the first to do so while being unranked in both games. Last season, NU beat then-No. 1 Purdue 64-58 on Feb. 12, 2023, for its first all-time win against the nation's top team. The 'Cats have now won five of their last six contests against ranked opponents, the best six-game stretch in school history. Head coach Chris Collins won his 15th game against a ranked opponent, tied for the most by a head coach in program history.
Reigning Big Ten Player of the Week Boo Buie averaged 27.0 points, 8.0 assists, 3.0 rebounds, and 1.5 steals over two games last week. Against No. 1 Purdue, Buie posted 31 points, nine assists and did not commit a turnover, becoming the only high-major player in the country to notch 31-plus points, nine-plus assists and no turnovers in a game since at least 2010. Buie's 1,689 career points are tied for fifth in school history with Michael "Juice" Thompson.
Ryan Langborg recorded a season-high 20 points against Purdue, bringing him to 889 points on his career, just 11 away from 900 career points.
Ty Berry tallied a season-high 21 points in the game, posting seven points in each half and overtime. The senior has scored in double figures in four straight games, the second-longest streak of his career.
Brooks Barnhizer is averaging 15.3 points and 7.9 rebounds per game in his first season starting for the Wildcats. His team-high 7.9 rebounds per game lead the league among guards.
Northwestern dominated the turnover battle against the Boilermakers, forcing 17 turnovers while committing just three. Northwestern is the second team to turn the ball three or fewer times against an AP No. 1 opponent since 2010-11. The Wildcats lead the country, committing just 8.0 turnovers per game, and are sixth nationally in assist/turnover ratio (1.95).
Sunday will mark Northwestern's second all-time meeting with Detroit Mercy (0-9). The Titans claimed the only previous meeting 94-84 on Dec. 29, 1956. UDM is led offensively by Jayden Stone, who averages 21.3 points and 6.6 rebounds per game.
The Wildcats conclude their season-long four-game homestand with a weeknight contest against Chicago State at 7 p.m. CT on Wednesday, Dec. 13, which will air on BTN and WGN Radio 720.
