EVANSTON, Ill. – After a week off, the Northwestern men's basketball team returns to action by kicking-off a season-long four-game homestand against in-state foe Northern Illinois at 7 p.m. CT on Monday, Nov. 27, inside Welsh-Ryan Arena. The contest will air on B1G+ with Noah Coffman (play-by-play) and Matthew Placzek (analyst) on the call, while Dave Eanet (play-by-play) and Billy McKinney (analyst) will have the radio call on WGN Radio 720.
Last weekend, the Wildcats (4-1) split a pair of games at the Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament in Uncasville, Conn., defeating Rhode Island 72-61, before falling 66-57 to Mississippi State in the championship game.
Boo Buie earned All-Tournament honors after posting 25 points, 10 rebounds, four steals, and three assists across two games. Ty Berry posted 14 points against Rhode Island and 13 against Mississippi State, his first time this season scoring in double figures in consecutive games.
After an expanded role late last season, Brooks Barnhizer has gotten off to a hot start in 2023-24. Barnhizer is averaging 16.4 points and 8.4 rebounds per game in his first season in the starting lineup. Since 2010-11, Barnhizer is one of just two Wildcats to average at least 16 points and eight rebounds over the first five games of the season (Drew Crawford - 2014-14, 83 points, 40 rebounds).
Northwestern has been one of the best teams in the country at taking care of the ball this year, averaging 9.2 turnovers per game, which ranks second in the Big Ten and 26th nationally. The Wildcats also force an average of 16.0 turnovers per game, fourth-most in the Big Ten.
Monday's matchup will mark the 13th all-time meeting between the Wildcats and Huskies on the hardwood. Northwestern leads the all-time series 10-2, including a 6-0 edge in Welsh-Ryan Arena/McGaw Memorial Hall. Last season, Berry posted a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds as the Wildcats downed NIU 63-46 in Evanston. The two teams are meeting in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2009 and 2010.
NIU enters Monday's matchup at 5-1, with their only loss coming on the road at No. 4 Marquette. Last time out, the Huskies defeated DePaul 89-79 at Wintrust Arena on Saturday night behind 34 points from David Coit.
The Wildcats will begin league play at 8 p.m. CT on Friday, Dec. 1, with a contest against No. 2 Purdue inside Welsh Ryan Arena.
