'Cats Fall to Mississippi State in Hall of Fame Tip-Off Title Game

UNCASVILLE, Conn. - Northwestern dropped a hard-fought contest to Mississippi State, 66-57, in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off championship game at Mohegan Sun Arena in Connecticut on Sunday afternoon. The Wildcats move to 4-1 on the season with the loss, while the Bulldogs improved to 5-0.
Ty Berry led the way for the Wildcats with 14 points and four steals, while Ryan Langborg and Brooks Barnhizer each chipped in 13 points. Boo Buie added nine points and a career-high eight rebounds. Buie was named to the All-Tournament Team after posting 25 points across two games..
How It Happened
For the second-straight day, the 'Cats jumped out to a large early lead, taking a 15-3 advantage in the first 7:30 of the contest thanks to seven points from Langborg. The Bulldogs responded quickly to cut the lead to five with five minutes remaining in the half. With Blake Preston and Matthew Nicholson both in foul trouble, Luke Hunger came off the bench to provide valuable minutes down low at the end of the first half, tallying four points and two rebounds in eight minutes. MSU nailed a shot from deep with three seconds remaining to cut the Wildcats' lead to 29-27 going into halftime.
It was a back-and-forth battle early in the second half, with four lead changes in the first 13 minutes. Mississippi State pulled ahead with a 10-1 run, grabbing a 10-point lead. Despite six points in the final four minutes from Barnhizer, the 'Cats were unable to crawl back. Josh Hubbard was dominant for the Bulldogs, posting 29 points on 9-of-14 shooting.
