Sabre Squad Leads Way To Two Opening Weekend Wins

2/7/2021 10:54:00 PM | Women's Fencing

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Competing for the first time since March 2020, Wildcats fencing picked up wins over North Carolina (17-10) and Denison (24-3) - and the sabre group won all three of its bouts Sunday - to close the opening weekend of the 2021 campaign.

Led by first-year Sky Miller, who was 5-1 on Sunday and 8-1 over her final three dual appearances on the weekend, the sabre lineup knocked off Temple (5-4), Denison (8-1), North Carolina (6-3) and Penn State (6-3) in succession to close the competition.

"While the first day wasn't what we were hoping for from a results perspective, it wasn't totally unsurprising since it was our team's first competition in 11 months," said Wildcats head coach Zach Moss. "Between that, integrating our first-years into the team, and athletes filling new roles, there was  a lot of learning that took place. Mostly, our group had to face the pressure of competition for the first time as a unit and figure out how they would confront that as a team. This led to inconsistent performance as everyone worked through it individually and collectively. Individually, it took us a while to shake off the rust and to bring the consistent energy and focus needed for competition. All of that led to results that weren't up to our team's normal standard on Saturday."

"However," Moss continued, "By going through that storming and forming on Saturday, our group really found itself and came in strong on Sunday. There was great energy, focus, and excitement as our team flexed their strength on Day 2 – our unity on and off the strip. I was impressed with the way that every member fought tooth and nail for every touch. I'm excited to see our group carry that attitude and energy forward into our coming competitions."

Northwestern will host Wayne State and Lawrence University at historic Patten Gymnasium on Sunday, February 14. The space underwent a multi-million dollar transformation to create a state-of-the-art fencing facility that reopened in 2020.
