Wildcats Take No. 2 Washington to Final Inning

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - No. 25 Northwestern dropped a tight battle against No. 2 Washington, 3-2, on a walk-off home run to conclude the Mary Nutter Classic.
Kaley Winegarner got the start for Northwestern, allowing two runs in 2.1 innings. First-year Sydney Supple kept the game close, tossing 4.0 innings of one-run relief against one of the nation's top offenses. She also went 2-for-3 at the plate.
The Wildcats opened the scoring in the first inning when Rachel Lewis came around to score on an error. Washington responded quickly with two runs of their own in the second inning.
After back-to-back singles by Jordyn Rudd and Nikki Cuchran in the seventh inning, the 'Cats were down to their last strike of the game with two runners on. First-year Angela Zedak delivered for Northwestern, tying the game with an RBI-single to keep the 'Cats alive.
Washington struck back three batters later with a solo home run to end the game.
The 'Cats will travel to Oklahoma next weekend to play five games in the Oklahoma Invitational, including a rematch of last year's Super Regional against No. 3 Oklahoma. Northwestern will take on North Texas in their first matchup of the weekend at 10:30 a.m. CT on Friday.
