Wildcats Split Friday Doubleheader at Oklahoma

2/28/2020 5:57:00 PM | Softball

NORMAN, Okla. – Northwestern began its stay at the Courtyard Marriott Tournament hosted by the University of Oklahoma with an 8-1 victory over North Texas, followed by a setback to the No. 5 ranked Sooners on Friday afternoon.

Danielle Williams got the start in game one and turned in a masterful performance, tossing her third complete game of the season while striking out a season-high 12 batters en route to an 8-1 win. Williams allowed just four hits (none after the third inning) and retired 14 of the final 15 batters she faced.

Williams also contributed at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored. The home run marked her of the season, as well as the third game of her career in which she tossed a complete game and hit a home run.

Skyler Shellmyer went 2-for-4 with two RBI against the Mean Green, coming through with a two-out RBI single in the top of the second to score Williams and Mac Dunlap and give the Wildcats a 4-0 advantage.

One inning later, Nikki Cuchran added to the 'Cats lead with a solo home run to right field, her first long ball of the year, to put NU on top, 5-1.

Following Williams' two-run homer in the sixth inning, Gracie Huff put the finishing touches on a stellar offensive output with a pinch-hit RBI double in the top of the seventh to bring around Cuchran. Huff was one of two Wildcat rookies to come through in a pinch hitting scenario, as Ashley Schultz also recorded her first-career hit in the top of the sixth.

In Game Two on the afternoon, the Wildcats outhit the Sooners, 7-6, but ultimately a five run third inning for Oklahoma proved to be the difference.

After Oklahoma jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, the Wildcats battled back in the top of the third, as Maeve Nelson drove in Angela Zedak with a single into the left-center gap. Later in the inning, the Wildcats even the score at 2-2 thanks to a perfectly executed squeeze bunt from Jordyn Rudd to score Rachel Lewis.

Morgan Newport led the Wildcats at the plate against Oklahoma, going 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a walk. She was one of four Wildcats to reach base multiple times vs. the Sooners, along with Nelson, Rachel Lewis–who went 1-for-2 with two walks and a run scored– and Angela Zedak–who turned in her second multi-hit game of the season.

Northwestern is back in action tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. CT with a matchup vs. Abilene Christian. From there, the Wildcats will be seeded and head into bracket play, playing again on Saturday afternoon at either 3:30 or 6 p.m. CT.
