EVANSTON, Ill. - No. 3 Northwestern and No. 7 Notre Dame battled in a top-10 showdown Friday night at Ryan Fieldhouse. The Wildcats fell to the Fighting Irish in a 17-15 nail-biter.
Sophomore Izzy Scane kicked off the scoring with a free position goal 30 seconds into the first half. Junior Lauren Gilbert followed just over a minute later to start off a quick back-and-forth between the Wildcats and the Fighting Irish.
The 'Cats fought back from a 4-2 deficit with goals from senior Megan Kinna and Gilbert. Kinna recorded her second hat-trick of the season and ended the night with three goals. First-years Erin Coykendall and Jane Hansen also contributed goals in the first half.
Sophomore goalkeeper Madison Doucette dominated between the pipes to start off the second half. Her six saves helped spark a 4-0 run by the 'Cats in the first ten minutes of the half to erase Notre Dame's four goal lead.
Graduate student Liza Elder brought fire to the field scoring twice within a minute with 10 minutes remaining in the second. Scane scored again for her fourth goal of the game with 3:47 remaining, but the 'Cats couldn't find any more scoring in the final half.
Scane led both teams with eight points on the night, tallying a team-high four goals and a career-high four assists. She has scored four or more goals in all three games to start the season.
Northwestern's double-header weekend continues Sunday afternoon when the 'Cats take on Arizona State. The game will begin at 12 p.m. in Ryan Fieldhouse.
