'Cats Prepare for Final Regular Season Match Up

1/29/2020 12:23:00 PM | Men's Swimming and Diving, Women's Swimming and Diving

West Lafayette, IND- Northwestern swimming and diving is headed into the final weekend of the regular season looking to tackle a tri-dual showdown with Purdue and Minnesota in West Lafayette, Ind. on Friday and Saturday. This is the sixth straight season the Wildcats have closed out the regular season with the Boilermakers and the Golden Gophers.

Northwestern is coming off a strong weekend in the water, sweeping Cincinnati at home last Friday, then splitting decisions with Wisconsin in Madison Saturday: the women took a 166.5-133.5 win while the men fell 161-139.

For the men, all eyes will be on Federico Burdisso, the first-year star who took home five individual gold medals in the two-meet set last weekend after bringing home two Big Ten Freshman of the Week and one Big Ten Swimmer of the Week honors the two weeks prior.

Burdisso and the Northwestern men will face off with Purdue's Nick McDowell, who out touched nationally ranked competition in the 500 free last week against Indiana, and Minnesota's Max McHugh, who has earned NCAA 'A' cuts in both the 100 and 200 breast.

For the women, record breaking individual seasons will continue to be funneled into dominant relay squads. Both the A and B 200 medley relay teams took the top two spots in the event against Cincinnati and Wisconsin while the 400 free relay set a new pool record against Cincinnati, coming in at 3:17.45.

The biggest matchups for the women will come in the breaststroke events, with dominant first-year Hannah Brunzell facing off with Purdue's Sylvia Kobylak and Minnesota's Lindsey Kozelsky, each bringing in NCAA 'B' cut times in the 200 breast.

The 'Cats hit the water at 5 p.m. CT Friday and at 11 a.m. CT Saturday. After this tri-dual meet, they will prepare to travel to Iowa City, Iowa for the Big Ten Championship on Feb. 19.
