Wildcats Sweep Hawkeyes on Senior Day

EVANSTON, IL – Northwestern swimming and diving defeated Iowa with the men's team outscoring the Hawkeyes 157-143 and the women 199-101 to sweep senior day, Saturday afternoon at the Norris Aquatics Center.

The Wildcats got the day started fast, with both the men's and women's 200 medley relays earning the top spot. The women's relay team of senior Nicole Aarts, junior Sophie Angus, sophomore Miriam Guevara and junior Maddie Smith led the 1-2 NU finish for the women in a time of 1:41.38 to put the 'Cats up 15-2 early in the meet.
 
The men's team of sophomore Manu Martos Bacarizo, first-years Kevin Houseman and Federico Burdisso and sophomore Andrew Zhang followed the women's lead, touching in a season best time of 1:28.11 to give the 'Cats an early 11- 6 lead on the Hawkeyes.
 
The 'Cats continued their sweep with juniors Ilektra Lebl and DJ both out-touching their competition in the 1000 free to earn top finishes for the 'Cats.
 
Sheridan returned to the pool to lead the 1-2-4 NU finish in the women's 100 back. Sheridan touched in 54.24, just ahead of teammates Aarts and first-year Emma Lepisova.
 
The men finished in a similar fashion, led by sophomore Martos Bacarizo for a 1-2-5 Wildcat finish by sophomore Ryan Gridley and senior Jack Thorne.
 
NU dominated the 100 breast on both sides with Brunzell, Angus, sophomore Tara Vovk and junior Becky Kamau scoring a combined 16 points for the women and Houseman and Mok scoring 11 for the men.
 
In a dominant fashion, F. Burdisso set his first pool and school record as a Wildcat, touching in a time of 1:44.14 in the 200 fly. Guevara just out-touched her competition to claim the women's 200 fly  in a time of 2:01.38.
 
Junior Malorie Han and Smith split the title in the women's 50 free, both touching in 23.42. Han came back to claim top points in the 100 free, leading the 'Cats 1-3-4-5 finish of Larson, Lara and Smith to bring the 'Cats point total to 116.
 
NU swept the 200 back with Sheridan touching in 1:59.04 for the women and Bacarizo touching in 1:44.75 to each earn nine points for Chicago's Big Ten Team.
 
The Wildcats continued to sweep, with the women earning the top four spots in the 200 breast and the men finishing first and fourth. The women were led by Brunzell in a time of 2:15.36, followed by Angus, Vovk and Kamu.
 
The 'Cats were also dominant on the diving boards with first-year Marking Hopkins taking first in the 3 M and sophomore Yohan Eskrick-Parkinson earning top marks in the 1M
 
The duo of Guevara and Burdisso were back in action for the 100 fly, both first to the wall by nearly a second to each earn nine Wildcat points.

Northwestern finished the day with 22 individual wins and three relay wins to earn their fifth combined Big Ten win this season.
 
Chicago's Big Ten team will be back in the pool on Friday, January 24 as they take on Cincinnati at the Norris Aquatics Center starting at 3:30 pm.
